وَعَنand of كَمَدٍgrief فَلَّblunted غَربَthe edge of السُلُوِّsolace
وَشَوقand longing أَعادَturned حِراكيmy movement سُكوناstillness
And of grief that blunted the edge of solace,
The west wind blew and bent the slim branches,
and longing that turned my movement to stillness,
And yearning stirred my stillness once again,
وَقَلبٌand a heart يَرىsees كُلَّevery شَيءٍthing يَعينُaids
قُلوبَthe hearts of العِبادِpeople عَلَيهِagainst it مَعيناan ally
and a heart that sees whatever aids
A heart that sees in everything a friend
people's hearts as an ally against itself.
To soothe all other hearts that know but pain,
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see بَعدَكَafter you شَيئاًanything يَسُرُّdelights
فَأَفتَحso I might open أَنساًin joy إِلَيهِtoward it الجُفوناthe eyelids
And since you left, I have seen nothing that delights me,
Since you departed I have found no joy
so that I might open my eyelids to it in joy.
To make me lift my heavy lids, not one,
وَجُملَةand the sum of أَمريmy condition أَنّيthat I اِشتَكَيتُI complained
وَقَدand indeed كانَhad been دَهريmy days ليto me مُستَليناgentle
And the sum of my plight is that I have complained,
My sole complaint that I became distraught
though my days had been gentle with me.
When once my days were gay beneath the sun,
وَجَرَّبتُand I tested مَذsince غِبتَyou were absent عَنّيfrom me الكِرامthe generous
فَكانواso they were الشُكوكَdoubts وَكُنتَand you were اليَقيناcertainty
And since you went away from me, I have tested the generous:
And since nobility has left my side
so they proved to be doubts, while you were certainty.
I've proven doubt, while you remain the truth.
