وَلَقَدand indeed صَحِبتُI accompanied الدَهرَTime صُحبَةَthe companionship of عارِفٍone who knows
مَتَعَوِّدٍaccustomed لِصَلاحِهِto its goodness وَفَسادِهِand its corruption
And indeed I have kept company with Time as one who knows it,
accustomed to its good and its ill.
وَخَبَرتُهُand I tested it فَرَأَيتُso I found ذَنبيmy fault عِندَهُin its eyes
فَضليmy merit وَأَعجَزَنيand defeated me دَواءُthe cure for عِنادَهُits obstinacy
And I have tested it, and found my fault in its eyes
to be my merit; curing its obstinacy proved beyond me.
وَمِنَand among البَلِيَّةِafflictions أَنthat تُداوىyou treat حِقدَthe rancor of مَنone who
نِعَمُthe blessings of الإِلهGod عَلَيكَupon you مِنamong أَحقادِهِhis resentments
And it is an affliction to treat the rancor of one
whose resentments include God's blessings upon you.
