And day is night in the dust cloud's darkness,

And the charge rends its outstretched veil.

And on the sword-blades, from combat and its earnestness,

    terror turned their whiteness rose-red.

And spear-thrusts rob the steeds of their markings,

And blows kindle fire in the helmets.

And over souls are death's advance guards,

And fear seeks their lost fortitude.

And land has turned to sea, and midmorning

to night, and the open expanse of space to iron.

And the best the horsemen could do was spur

the long-necked steeds, in obedience to flight.

Until, when desire parted from judgment,

and certainty became a witness against conjectures,

none but Abu Shujaʿ availed, while glory

whispers of him to victory and aid.
