And a narcissus: its white part is no more than the

cup, and its yellow part no more than wine.

You would think that bowls of silver held

    goblets of yellow gold.

As though greetings, through it, bestowed

    in kindness, souls upon souls.

It distracts from the rose whenever it gazes,

and takes the place of musk when it gives off fragrance.

How dear it is—a departing visitor,

    repaid with sorrows for joys.

So seize the opportunity while it is near,

    and be eager for pleasures.

And bring the wine, a virgin never deflowered

at night without the night turning to dawn.

As though each of the maidens held

in its cups carried a lamp.

And pluck with your glances from the two cheeks

of its cupbearer roses and apples.
