O my nights at al-Matira and al-Kar-
Oh nights of rain and monastery,
kh and the monastery of al-Susi—by God, return!
Deir Al-Soussi, by God return to me,
كُنتِyou were عِنديto me أَنموذَجاتٍsamples
كُنتِ عِندي أَنموذَجاتٍ
مِنَof الجَنَّةِParadise لكِنَّهاbut they بِغَيرِwithout خُلودِeternity
مِنَ الجَنَّةِ لكِنَّها بِغَيرِ خُلودِ
You were, to me, samples
You were to me models,
of Paradise, but they lacked eternity.
Of heaven, but without eternity,
أَشرَبُI drink الراحَthe wine وَهِيَand it تَشرَبُdrinks عَقليmy reason

I drink the wine, while it drinks my reason,
I drink liquor while it drinks my mind,
and on that account al-Walid was slain.
And for that Al-Walid was killed.
