And a host embroidered with white swords, supple mail, and spears,
With speckled hide of white and black and furrowed flank,
adorning its flanks with lean, hollow-bellied steeds,
Her shoulders clad in a coat of mail ringed close between,
بَعيدَةِwide apart ماthe space بَينَbetween الجَناحَينِthe two wings فيduring السُرىthe night march

its wings far apart on the night march,
Long striding with the daylight when the morn is bright,
the space between two armored warriors narrowed by blows;
And short her steps when darkness rules the starry night,
مِنَamong السالِباتِthose that strip الشَمسَthe sun ثَوبَthe robe ضِيائِهاof its radiance

one of those that strip the sun of its robe of radiance,
The sun unrobes her glory and her shine lays bare,
with a robe woven by the earth's rising dust.
As clouds spread out across the radiant morn's repair,

The drunken spear chides the singing sword-edge,
Rebuking her, loud-voiced, the pool of Nu'uman plain
when the two meet within it, for drinking so little.
When the two meet, for water scarce midst grass and cane,

It brought night back upon us with dust at midmorning,
The night drove on and hid the day and cheerful light;
and restored dawn to us at night with firebrands.
The morn returned and drove the murky dark of night.

It shines forth, revealing the two suns of Nizār and Yaʿrub,
She lightens from the shining pair of Nizār then,
and smiles, revealing the two mountains of mighty Taghlib's glory.
And from two lofty mounts that o’er all heights are ken.

It is stately; the loop of its rein is guided
Majestic is she, leading well the halter's rein,
by one versed in the ailments of battle and war,
Discerning what afflicts, the soreness and the pain,
أَصَحَّsurer اِعتِزاماًin resolve مِنthan خَؤونٍa treacherous one عَلىin قِلىًhatred

surer in resolve than a treacherous man in his hatred,
More firmly purposed than Khaula's troth to friends,
and more forceful in judgment than passion over a lovesick man.
More binding than all bonds desire for pleasure rends.
