1. وَجَوفاءَ حامِلَةٍ تَهتَدي

    إِلى كُلِّ قَلبٍ بِمَقروحِهِ

    And a hollow, laden one that finds her way

    to every heart through its wounded part;

  2. مُقَوَّمَةِ القَدِّ مَمشوقَةٍ

    مُهَفهَفَةِ الجِسمِ مَمسوحِهِ

    straight in stature, tall and slender,

    delicate of body, smoothly finished;

  3. مُثقَّفَةٍ فَمُها عَينُها

    تُبَشِّرُ قَلبي بَتَصحيحِهِ

    well-fashioned, her mouth is her eye,

    giving my heart glad tidings of its healing.

  4. فَإِن هِيَ وَالجارِحُ اِستُنهِضا

    إِلى الصَيدِ عاقَتهُ عَن ريحِهِ

    So if she and the hunting animal are roused

    to the hunt, she bars it from the quarry's scent.

  5. إِذا المَرءُ أَودَعَها سِرَّهُ

    لِتُخفيهِ باحَت بِتَصريحِهِ

    When a man entrusts his secret to her

    for her to hide it, she declares it openly.

  6. مَواتٌ تَعيشُ إِذا ما أَعادَ

    لَها النافِخُ الروحَ مِن روحِهِ

    Lifeless, she lives whenever there is restored

    to her by the blower a spirit from his own.

  7. هِيَ السَبَطانَةُ في شَكلِها

    فَفي القَلبِ جِدُّ تَباريحِهِ

    She is a blowpipe in outward form;

    so in the heart is the full force of its anguish.

  8. تَحُطُّ أَبا الفَرخِ عَن وَكرِهِ

    وَتَستَنزِلُ الطَيرَ مِن لوحِهِ

    She brings the chick's father down from his nest,

    and brings the birds down from their sky.
