And a gathering-place where whoever dwells takes his place

among lofty honors, on the highest rung.

By evening, the brazier’s company there became for us

the greatest delight of souls and hearts.

It shows us tongues like the tongues of

snakes, some still and some quivering.

When the charcoal appeared within it, black as the

night, and scattered sparks like lamps,

and the flame’s hue crept through it with the crimson blush

of the cheeks of blood-red anemones,

I thought the midmorning sun had revealed itself within it

to all creation, in a dome of jet.
