Through love I dwelt beside a heart my thoughts did not leave
I dwelled with a heart that love left no thought for me
to enjoy love within it, nor did they leave it
To take pleasure in love, yet left me not

to distinguish between sorrow never separated
Parting worry that parts not
from it and solace never joined to it.
From it, and consolation that gathers not

It yearns, but sound judgment curbs its yearning;
It pours, but forbearance holds back its pouring
and the noblest love is that nearest to piety.
And the noblest love is the lowest in piety

And within me is the keenest passion—if I took comfort in
In me is a passion that, had I complained, would not cease
complaint; yet I prepare patience against anguish.
But I ready patience for anguish
ماwhat بالُthe matter with أَهلِthe people of زَمانيmy time مِنbecause of تَجاهُلِهمtheir feigned ignorance

بِمَوضِعي بَينَ مَغبونٍ وَمُختَدعِ
What ails the people of my time, that they feign ignorance
Why do the people of my time ignore me
of my standing, leaving me caught between being cheated and deceived?
Between a duped one and a deceiver?

He whose deeds do not add honor to his people
He who by his deeds increased not his people’s honor
through merit is no originator of any idea.
With merit is meaningless in purpose

I shunned the watering places when, thirsty, I did not find
I refused the watering places when I found no
in the abundance of water anything that made gulping needless.
Thirst quenched in plenty of water without a sip
