They kept the greeting apparition away from me,
They denied me the surrendering imagination,
So there is no union except an imagined one.
So there is no union except what is fancied.

How can the dream-phantom visit by night? The eyes have not lessened
How can the specter of the beloved appear, if the eyes
Their tears for her at all, nor has the lovesick lover dozed.
Do not shed tears or the youth yearn?

Night has pegged down the stars, tethering
The night has pitched its stars like tent pegs,
My eyelids to them with my lashes, and pitched its tent.
And draped my eyelids with its darkness.

He whose home was al-Thuwayyah,
That I spent the night lovesick in Iraq's al-Zawra.
Now abides in the outskirts of Iraq in gloom.

Whenever the caravan of breeze passes by,
Seeking a breath of news of the one I loved.
I waylay it for news of my beloved in sighs.

O night of Najd, your morn returns not,
But the one in al-Ghawr has smiled late at night.
Yet he in seclusion smiles at me in languor.

The darkness parted to reveal a maiden's light,
The darkness was rent by the light of radiant Ghada,
Which lit whatever in the horizons had been dark.
Illuminating what had been obscured.

When her face and the full moon appeared in their beauty,
No one can tell which of the two is the moon.
None can tell which of the two is the moon.

I swear if not for the touch of her saliva’s coolness,
The ember of her cheek would be on the verge of blazing.
The embers of my cheek would have blazed.

In my ears, I would not have borne her blame all my life.

O my friend, when longing took over its guide,
Taking my tormented heart into Najd and Tihama.
It inspired my heart and became decisive.

Our steeds carried us to demand the song
Begging the melodious camel-driver for a song.
From the singer, raising their neighs rhythmically.

Beneath night's tent, a son of daring within me
And under night’s veil, that son of murderous valor
Conceals from reproachers a closely guarded love.
Concealed his love, whispering surreptitiously.

So turn aside the necks of the swiftly striding mounts,
So tilt your mounts’ necks forward into a gallop,
Perhaps a dwelling at the valley-bend may be traced.
Hoping to alight at the dwellings in alarm.

The encampment lies deserted, save for the caravan's stopping-place within it,
The resting place is empty but for the caravan at its center,
Salma's—if you two would help me, then give it greetings.
For Salma, so if you grant me success, convey my greetings.

Sa’d blamed us the day our mounts mingled
Just when we asked him to linger.
When we departed from him, fearing his discontent.

A sturdy she-camel flew with him at the caravan's head,
And a snarling, growling mare carried him off
A Ghurayriyya, afraid of the stiff, unsoftened whip.
At the lead of the pack, fearing the forbidden herd.

And a gaze divided between her steps and the whip.
And between the whip and reins a watchful eye.

He saw that love's sickness is contagious even in its first stirrings,
When he saw that the malady of love had afflicted his companion,
So he forsook his companion and went on to stay safe.
He surrendered himself and passed in acquiescence.

O you two intimates, if you do not oppose
My nature, say so, and I will cut the cord that binds me to you both.
My nature, then say: sever the rope from you!

So give precedence to nothing but what matters.
So place nothing before the important.

The opportunities of life are but on loan,
If you two did not know that, then know it.
If you did not know that, then know it now!

Two hands, yet who has never bestowed a favor with them.
Yet has not extended a hand to help them.

And longing that rules over my heart this morning.
And a yearning which overpowered my heart at dawn.

I stood amidst the ruins of the dwellings
From sickness, a mere trace visiting other traces on pale camels.
Like a picture of grief upon the mourner imprinted.

A mantle fringed with rays upon the ground.

Had they come from my eye, they would have lasted longer.
As if it flowed from my own watering eye.

Generosity is no innate trait in the clouds' downpour,
The clouds’ generosity is no habit,
But the clouds learned it from the tears of my eye.
But know it is from my tears they learned it.

Would that my eyes and thoughts never desist,
Throughout time, to cast pearls, singly and in pairs,
Scattering pearls plentifully, ceaselessly.

By the favors I knew which brought me bliss.

I scatter for them the strung pearls of weeping,
And offer them the pearls of praise, strung in order.
And weave for them necklaces of praise with skill.

Rising to the highest pinnacle of glory,
And the greatest in gains from the treasure of praise.
And gaining from treasuries of praise their fill.

In the shade of 'Aziz al-Din, his people have risen in honor,
In the shade of the mighty Faith they gained honor,
So in the sky of honor they resemble stars.
Thus they dwell in the heavens of might like stars.

The soundness of their counsel makes it straight.

For a new event, or the sword unsheathed for fate.

The steed of generosity runs without end,
While prudence keeps his might forever bridled.
And with wisdom, their might makes epochs submit.

Some gain a portion while the rest get crumbs.

High-minded men whose time was devoid
The virtuous men whose ages have passed and ended.
Of any virtuous peer and so became unique!

A caravan has departed before, leaving after them
A pool that gathered those drops and was filled to the brim.
A river brimful with crowds from their torrent.

Leave praise and his glory together, O people of this age,
Leave off praise, O people of the age, and its glory,
For they were made only as a bracelet and a wrist.
For they were not created but as bracelets and amulets.

A crescent that appeared, a star that rose, a destiny that struck;
The crescent appeared, a star rose, destiny decreed,
A cloud that poured, a mountain standing firm, a lion that defended.
Clouds gathered, a hillock stood tall, a lion roared.

So let whoever rises rise in the heights like this.
Forever towering in the heights sublime.

He is the towering hillock, bearing all you load upon him,
Whereas the old camel undertakes no burden beyond its capacity.
If the rod does not break, bearing only what it can withstand.

I was, and the events of time were shifting about,
At times drawing back a foot, at times advancing it.
At times lagging behind and at others preceding.

So here I am, when my time decided its rein,
The archer of my ardent longing bore me onward, having let fly.
It made me cast the excess of my passion and so cast off.

The steeds have come to you like the white-footed ostriches,
Bearing, out of longing, the visitors as arrows.
Bearing the arrows of my passion in their quivers.

And came to you, for you were a landmark of learning.
And came to you when you were the signpost of knowledge.

And return from your lofty summits to be served in turn.
And return from my sublime only your scattered rays.

That if my mounts visit the son of the praised Hamed,
I return with his bounty, humbling my enviers.
I would return to my enviers with his favors humbled.

Grant aid, Abu Nasr, to one who hopes through you for greatness,
So victory, Abu Nasr, to an exalter in you,
Against time, should it be found oppressing him.
Over fate, though it be found morseling him greedily!
أبعْدَis it after بُلوغيmy attaining فيكَthrough you ماwhat كنتُI was آمِلاًhoping for
يَرانيsee me العِداthe enemies أُكْلاًfood لهمْfor them مُتَخضِّماto be devoured
After gaining through you what I had hoped for,
The utmost I hoped in reaching you,
Will my enemies see me as food for them to devour?
My enemies see me as food for them to devour whole.
قَصدْتُكI sought you لَمْnot أَمدُدْI stretched out بمُعْجِبةٍwith something admirable يَداًa hand
لديكَbefore you ولمand not أَفغَرْI opened wide بمُرضيةٍwith something pleasing فَماa mouth
I sought you; I did not stretch out a hand with anything admirable
I came to you without extending in your presence
Before you, nor open a mouth with anything pleasing.
A hand in praise, nor opening in illness a mouth.
ولكنّنيbut I لمّاwhen رأيتُكَsaw you كَعبةًa Kaaba
أتيتُكَI came to you منfree of كُلِّall الوسائلِmeans of approach مُحْرِماin pilgrim consecration
But when I saw you as a Kaaba,
But when I saw you were the Kaaba,
I came to you consecrated, stripped of every means of approach.
I came to you by every lawful way a pilgrim.
حلَلْتَyou attained منin الإفضالِbeneficence والفَضْلِand excellence منزلاًa station
يَرُدُّrenders فصيحَthe eloquent man of القومthe people عندَكbefore you أَعجَماinarticulate
You have attained in beneficence and excellence a station
You have attained from bestowal and virtue such a station
That renders the people's eloquent man inarticulate before you.
That the eloquent stammer before you in dismay.
وأَخجَلُand I am ashamed فيin مَدِحيكpraising you خجلةَwith the shame of غائصٍa diver
يَرُدُّreturning علىto البَحْرِthe sea الّلآلىpearls وقدwhen already طَماoverflowed
In praising you, I feel the shame of a diver
I am shy in praising you with the shyness of a diver
Who returns pearls to a sea already overflowing.
Repulsed by the deep sea though he dove to plumb.
وأَغْنِand how self-sufficient بنَحْرِis the breast of البَحرِthe sea عنwithout عِقْدِthe necklace of ناظمٍa stringer
ومِنand from عندِهwith it إخراجُthe bringing forth of ماwhat هوhe نَظَّماstrung
How little the sea's breast needs a necklace from a stringer,
And the sea’s gullet suffices over the composer’s necklace,
When what he strings is brought forth from the sea itself.
And makes unnecessary what he has threaded and strung.
بقولِكَwith your words مَسروقاًstolen لَقِيتُكَI met you مادِحاًpraising you
فأصغَيْتَso you listened عنwith علْمٍknowledge إليَّto me تَكَرُّماout of generosity
With stolen words of yours, I met you as a praiser,
I came to you, my praise plagiarized, reciting it,
And knowingly you listened to me out of generosity.
So you listened to me with a knowledge that honored.
كأنّكas though you فيin ذاكthat السَّموألُal-Samaw'al مُنصَتاًlistening
يُعيرُlending صَداهhis echo السّمْعَa hearing لمّاwhen تَكلماit spoke
As though, in this, you were al-Samaw'al, listening,
As if you in your towering summit hearkened
Lending his echo a hearing when it spoke.
To an echo that lent hearing though you spoke not.
لأَوسعْتَyou surely lavished إنعاماًfavors فلاso never زلْتَyou cease مُنعِماًbestowing favors
وبالَغْتَand you went to the utmost إكراماًin honoring فلازْلتَso may you never cease مُكْرِماhonoring
You have surely lavished favors; may you never cease bestowing them,
Had you expended generously, you would not cease being generous,
And gone to the utmost in honoring; may you never cease to honor.
Or shown utmost honor, you would not cease to honor.
ولاand may not خفَضbring low الأقدارُthe fates مَنwhoever كنتَyou were رافعاًraising
ولاand may not نقَضundo الأيّامُthe days ماwhat كنْتَyou were مُبرِماmaking firm
May the fates never bring low anyone you have raised,
Time does not demean whom you raise,
Nor may the days undo what you have made firm.
Nor do days destroy what you have decreed.
