    وقد يَذكرُ الإنسانُ ما كان ناسيا

    They cooed, reminding me of times long past;

    and a person may recall what he had forgotten.

    And were it not for love, the lament of doves

    on the tips of the grove's boughs would not have grieved me.

    Mourners who have worn out their mourning garb; you see

    nothing left upon them but what is fastened at the neck.

    And when the slanderers met, with the tribe departing,

    and he had set out to see me and take his leave of me,

    reflections of my tears appeared on his face,

    so clear it was; they thought he wept because I wept.

    Stop, you two, and turn a listening ear to my lament,

    and an eye lavish with tears, or feigning such generosity.

    بدَمْعي أُجبْ شَوقاً إليهمْ دَعانيا

    Leave me, you two, for my loved ones' homes lie far away;

    let me answer with my tears a longing for them that has called me.

    وكم من مَنايا يَبتدِينَ أَمانيا

    They wished for things whose endings distressed them;

    and many a deadly fate begins as a wish.

    Nor is the mountain, firmly rooted in the earth,

    shaken by meeting the coursing winds.

    So give thanks, servants of God, for gifts,

    when bound with gratitude, cast their anchors.

    So the days have only increased your eminence,

    and the loss of your peers has only raised you higher.

    فصِرنا نَراكَ الشّمسَ والجوَّ خاليا

    And we once saw you as the full moon, and the nobles as stars;

    now we see you as the sun, with the sky empty.

    You now tread the world of men beneath your sandal,

    though, had you wished, you could have held it in your palm.

    And supremely great in the eyes of the wise

    is one exalted above kingship, not by kingship.

    Thought's daughter has come to you; it does not displease her,

    for all her pride, that you do not make the bridal gift costly.

    Praise so true that, when I recite it in your honor,

    it is as though I recite from it seven oft-repeated verses.

    Verses whose poetic worth thought has exalted,

    and whose wording it ennobled when it made their meanings subtle.

    And I shall send them to you, ode after ode,

    if you receive your loyal follower with honor.

    So it is enough for me that you bestow care on me,

    and enough for you that I offer you rhymes.

    So may your fortune ever rise, Shams al-Din,

    and your efforts be appreciated, and your fire-stick keep sparking.

    And may Ra'is al-Din reach the farthest bounds of desire,

    whenever he strives upward toward lofty honors.

    لأعيُنِنا كُلُّ يُضيءُ الدَّياجيا

    And you are Dhuka', the sun of glory, and he its son;

    to our eyes, each lights up the darkness of night.

    People offer you congratulations; I, instead,

    offer them congratulations on you as long as I live.

    So may the world always smile before your eyes,

    and may your life's draught from it stay clear.

    And may it celebrate its feast only at the sight of your face,

    and may it accept none but your enemies as sacrificial victims.
