How long will you torment the heart of one crazed with love?
How long will you torture a passionate heart?

And I wished - when praising you at dawn -
not to offer a supplication of complaint against the days.
To complain to the days: Do not supplicate!
ومتىand when تُبدَّلُwill be replaced قَوْلتيmy saying ياO لَهْفتيmy anguish
عندupon الإيابِreturning بقَولَتيwith my saying ياO فَرْحَتاmy joy
And when will my cry, “Alas for me!”
And when will my state change, O my anxiety,
be changed, on my return, to “Oh, my joy!”?
To my state, O my joy, when returning?
فلوِso if استَطعْتُI could لصُمْتُI would surely fast عنfrom كلّall الورىhumankind
صَوْماًa fast لِنيَّتِهfor its intention أكونُI would be مُبيِّتاforming it by night
So if I could, I would fast from all mankind—
If I could, I would keep silent from all people
a fast whose intention I would form by night—
Fasting, intending it, remaining overnight
حتىuntil أعودَI return مُعَيّداًcelebrating the feast بكَwith you راجياًhoping
فيin حَسْبتيmy reckoning للعَوْدِfor returning ألاnot to أغْلَتاmiscalculate
until I return to celebrate the feast with you, hoping
Until I return, seeking you again, hoping,
not to err in my reckoning of the return.
In my account, I will not be prevented from returning
فأْذَنْso grant leave جُعِلْتُmay I be made لكَfor you الفدىمنthe ransom; as a ماجدٍnoble man
فالأَمْرُfor the decision أمرُكis your decision نافِياًdenying أوor مُثْبِتاaffirming
Grant me leave, then—may I be your ransom, noble sir—
So permit me - may I be sacrificed for you - from Majid
for the decision is yours, to refuse or confirm.
The matter is yours, either refusing or affirming
اِحفَظْpreserve مكانيmy place فيin فؤادِكyour heart غائباًwhile absent
حِفْظيmy preserving مَكانكَyour place منupon لِسانيmy tongue يَثْبتُاwill remain firm
Keep my place in your heart while I am absent;
Keep my place in your heart while I am absent
my keeping your place upon my tongue shall remain firm.
My keeping your place - we both affirm it
لكto you مَحْضُpure شُكريmy gratitude والشِّكايةand the complaint كلُّهاall of it
لِصُروفِagainst the vicissitudes of دَهْرِكَyour age لمnot يَزلْhas ceased ليfor me مُعْنِتاafflicting
To you belongs my pure gratitude; all my complaint
My full gratitude is to you, and all my lament
is against your age's vicissitudes, which have ever afflicted me.
Is for the rotations of your fate that has tortured me
سيكونُwill be مُنشِدَthe reciter of مَدْحِpraises of مَجْدِكَyour glory فيamid البِلَىdecay
عَظْميmy bones وإنeven if هوit فيin الضّريحِthe tomb تَرفتاcrumbled
The praises of your glory will still be sung, amid decay,
There will be one reciting the praise of your glory in ruin
by my bones, even when they crumble in the tomb.
My bones, even if they are in the grave, crumbling
ولَوَand if أنَthat أرضاًearth للمَدائحfor praises أَنبتَتْbrought forth growth
أضحىwould become ثرىًsoil قدthat has ضَمَّنيenfolded me لكfor you مُنبِتاsprouting
And if earth could bring forth praises,
If the earth sprouted something for praises
the dust enclosing me would sprout them for you.
It would become, having buried me, your place of growth
فاسعَدْso rejoice بصَوْمٍin a fast أنتyou فيهduring it وقبلَهand before it
ماnot زلْتَhave you ceased للهِtoward God المُنيبَpenitent المُخْبِتاhumbly submissive
Rejoice in a fast: during it and before it, you
So have a good fast, while you are in it, and before it
have always turned to God, humble and penitent.
You have not ceased to turn penitently to God, humbly
واسَعدْand rejoice كذاكَlikewise بِعيدهِin its feast وبِعوْدِهand in its return
فيin العِزglory ماas long as غَنَّىsing الحَمامُthe doves وصَوّتاand call
And rejoice likewise in its feast and its return,
And similarly, have it on its holiday, and for its return
in glory, as long as doves sing and call.
In glory - while the doves sang and warbled
