ياO أهلَpeople of بغدادٍBaghdad سقَىmay water عَهْدِيmy days بكمwith you
غيْثٌrain يَبيتُspends the night لكمfor you كَدْمعِيlike my tears ساكِباpouring
O people of Baghdad, may my days with you be watered
O people of Baghdad, my covenant with you
by rain that pours for you all night, like my tears.
Has poured down like my tears through the night
لولاwere it not for خُطوبُcalamities الدّهرِtime كنتُI would be لعَودةٍfor a return
منّيfrom me إليكمto you قبلَbefore مَوْتِيmy death خاطباa suitor
But for time's calamities, I would be courting a return
If not for the calamities of fate, I would have
to you before my death.
Come back to you before my death, a suitor

My longing for you would prevail, were it not
My longing for you prevails, if only
for the prevailing vicissitudes of conquering nights.
The long nights did not prevail over the prevailer

Between me and you lies a blazing battle,
Between me and you a love is fermented
now engulfing non-Arabs and Arabs,
Encircling both non-Arabs and Arabs

With white scrolls that are swords
and swimming steeds, slender-bellied and lean.
And shining blades that are stabbing daggers

جمَعcombines الزّمانُtime لناfor us نوىًdistance ونوائباand calamities
distance alone sufficed; what then, when
Intention alone was enough, so how about when
time combines distance and calamities for us?
Fate brought together intention and calamities
فلذاكَso for that reason لاnot أَجِدُI find السّبيلَthe way مُطالِعاًvisiting
لكُمto you ولاnor أجِدُI find الرَّسولَthe messenger مُكاتِباwriting letters
For that reason, I find no way to visit
Thus I find no way to send you messages
you, nor a messenger through whom to write.
Nor do I find a messenger to write to you
وكذاكand likewise ماnot يَنفكُّceases to be قَلْبيmy heart شاهداًpresent

And likewise my heart remains present
And so my heart does not cease to witness you
with you, while my person remains absent.
While my person does not cease to be absent
