O our beloved ones, you have made us yearn; now grant us solace.

Do not both keep us awake and sleep yourselves.

Your eyelids have indeed been sewn shut upon sleep,

While my eyelid, kohled with darkness, is kept sleepless.

Do not claim sincere fidelity, when we

Are farther away than the star appearing high on the horizon.

In love I see us as arrows, and you

As bows: you draw near only to send us far away.

Every night I spend as sorrow's intimate companion,

As though my eye were a leather tent stretched out within it.

Its lashes are its tent-ropes, and the night's stars,

Having become its pegs, are silver and gold.

My sleep from my eye, my heart from my breast,

And my body from its homeland—each is driven away.

Streaming downward, while her sighs rose upward.

And her lovely long neck, bare of pearls, was lavish too,

By the vanguard of a parting whose army the morrow would bring.

Leaving my cheek furrowed by them.
