Events have led to your lofty rank,
For no one has worth except you.
For people, there is no significance without you.

And may friend and foe never cease,
Neither friend nor foe ever ceased
whenever calamity strikes, to be your ransom.
When a misfortune befell, you were their ransom.

For you established the paths of excellence for mankind,
You instituted honorable ways for people,
though in both they have not reached your heights.
Though they cannot reach the extent of your integrity.

When kings look upon you someday,
they see you as the mainstay of their rule.
They will see you as the guardian of their kingdom.

And if their kingdom has become a sky,
And if their rule becomes as high as the sky,
then your counsel has always been its Simak star.
Your opinion remains the pillar in it.

You were created from glory and honor,
your two mantles encompassed all the virtues.
So you encompassed all virtues in your cloak.

Were glory and honor a living being,
whom beholders could see, you would be that person.
Seen by all, you would be that one.

We turn away from clouds pouring rain,
We shield from pouring rainclouds
when your two clouds shower the delegations.
When clouds of delegations rain at your door.

We hear mention of generous people,
We hear talk of people's generosity,
and look, yet see no one but you.
Yet see none compared to you.

So we care not if the nights take offense,
We do not complain if nights become angry,
or their people, when we have won your favor.
And their people, when you are content with us.

God healed them when He healed you.
When He healed you of your plight.

May high honors never be denied splendor through you,
Excellence in you must not be forbidden,
and may kingdoms never lack your radiance.
Nor should realms be devoid of your excellence.

For none has ever worn good fortune's face as kohl
No eye has adorned itself with the face of fortune,
in this world, save an eye that sees you.
Unless it is one that sees you.

The delegations parted ways the morning they set out,
Delegations set out one morning,
while Time's horses clashed in fierce combat.
And time's steeds raced for your competition.

So night-coming calamities went to the enemies,
Those who rebel marched against enemies,
and night-coming visitors went to your heights.
While loyalists marched to your realm.

Time's sons—the seekers of bounty—are with you; but
The time's vagabonds may be with you,
Time's daughters seek out whoever hates you.
But time's daughters seek lesser men.

Whoever entrusts you with their affairs has a guarantor,
if Time brings unease, for what he has provided you.
When time tests with what has tested you.

Benevolence belongs to you alone among all mankind;
Goodwill to people is your possession,
your two hands are your witnesses to that truth.
Your hands honestly bear witness to this.

When people's praise became a wild creature,
And when people's praise turned hostile,
you laid nets of kindness to catch it.
You erected for it a net of kindness.

I see that withholding is some people's habit,
I see abstinence among the morals of a people,
but your two hands are accustomed only to opening wide.
Yet only openhandedness has been your habit.

So I marvel how, with such traits,
So I wonder how despite such traits,
the pen could endure being held within your palm.
The pen could restrain itself with you.

Between your account book and my book of verse,
My poetry and your accounts have
I see a shared concern for honoring obligations.
A partnership in herding the worthless.

My livelihood continues to flow here,

While my praise of you continues recited there.

So there is no reproach in paying my stipend,
So there is no flaw in my flowing,
nor in my pearls when made your adornment.
Nor are my pearls defective as your necklace.

I string them into delicate poems
when other verses have become feeble.
When others would turn into lifeless prose.

My gratitude for what you have bestowed is but
My gratitude for your patronage
a captive I have no power to ransom.
Remains hostage to what I can afford.

When an envious man seeks my standing with you,
When enviers seek to ruin me with you,
your judgment deters him from vying with me.
Your prohibition protects me from their onslaught.

when your knee-binding bands are fastened round a mountain?
When our bond is tied securely?

My riding camels journeyed to the lord al-Safi,
My travels led me to the loyal master,
and al-Safi suffices you once he has chosen you.
And your selection by the loyal one suffices.

As did the governor of provisions and wealth.

May you rejoice in a Kaaba that visited you, longing
May Mecca rejoice in visiting you eagerly,
for you, and graciously spared your footsteps,
And generously kissing the ground you tread.

The palm tree of Sowda calls you its branch—
so may God increase the glory of the one who raised you.
May God increase the pride of the one who brought you up.

She first brought you forth, and later came
It came to you first and last,
to visit you after your abode had grown distant.
Visiting after having yearned for you.

At your arrival a joy came over her
Your arrival filled it with joy
like that which came over you at her arrival.
Matching what your arrival had brought it.

You have glad tidings in her, as she had long ago;
Congratulations to you and long ago to it!
indeed, great and glorious are your two glad tidings!
Indeed, its esteem and veneration for you were great.

I rejoiced at your reunion after hardship;
I rejoiced that your kinship was united after separation—
perhaps you will likewise bring about my reunion.
Perhaps you will unite my kinship too.

I see before me a journey grown broad and long,
I see a folding and lengthening deviation,
and my only mount is your bounty.
While my steed is none but your call.

I have both a homeland and a wish;
I have a homeland and destination, both
your bounty will bring both, though distant, near to me.
Will lead me to their distant proximity through you.

The path to my two comforts is smooth
for you, when your two palms rain down.
When you initiate your comfort.

I yearn for the dwellings, bound
of hindrance that keeps me from moving.
By constraints hindering movement.

So loose the hobble of a worn-out mount of my hope;
So untie for my hope a firm rope,
let it carry me at full speed from your lands.
Facilitate my travel from your lands.

So wherever I express it, my gratitude will reach you

From afar, and your gifts will reach me in plenty.

My praise, though people have sought it, is nothing
However much people covet my praise,
but a fragrance clinging to the robe of your eminence.
It remains but a scent clinging to the cloak of your height.

Cease to turn its course according to your command.

No palm can gloat at grasping you.

You do not disappoint those who hope in you,
for you never make those who hope in you despair.
For you do not despair the ones who wish for you.
