أَصونُI shield سَمعَكyour hearing عنfrom شَكْوايَmy complaint إجْلالاًout of reverence
وقدand indeed لَقِيتُI encountered منfrom الأيّامِthe days أَهْوالاterrors
I shield your hearing from my complaint, out of reverence,
I protect your hearing from my complaints out of reverence,
though I have faced terrors at the hands of time.
Though I have suffered terrible tribulations from fate.
تَجمّعَتْgathered عِلَلٌailments شَتَّىvarious فماso not تَركَتْthey left
عليّfor me جِسماًa body ولاnor فِكْراًthought ولاnor حَالاwell-being
Various ailments have gathered, leaving
Various ailments have gathered and left
me neither body, nor thought, nor well-being.
Neither body, nor mind, nor state for me.
أشكوI complain إلىto اللهِGod مَنthose who عادَتْbecame بهمْthrough them حُرَقاًburning pangs
بَناتُdaughters صَدْريmy breast وكانتْand they were قبلُformerly آمالاhopes
I complain to God of those who made burning grief
I complain to God about those whose burning passion
of the daughters of my breast, which once were hopes.
Were once the daughters of my heart and hopes.
وسَفرةٌand a journey سَفَرَتْunveiled ليfor me فيin فِنائِهمُtheir courtyard
عنfrom وجْهِthe face شَمطاءَa gray-haired woman لاneither حُسْناًbeauty ولاnor مالاwealth
And a journey unveiled for me in their courtyard
A caravan traveled away from me when they perished,
the face of a gray-haired woman—neither beauty nor wealth.
From the face of a beautiful and wealthy woman.
لمَّاwhen طَرَقْتُهمُI visited them مُستَبضِعاًoffering as merchandise أَدَباًlearning
وأينand where مَنone who كانused to يَقْرىoffers hospitality to الفَضْلَmerit أفضالاfavors
When I came to them, offering learning as merchandise,
When I approached them with utmost humility and manners
and where is one who would welcome merit with favors?
Where is the one who was reading excellence and virtues?
حَمّلتُI loaded عِيسيmy pale camels إليهمْto them ثَروةًwealth وصِباًand youth
وعُدْتُand I returned مُحتقِباًladen شَيْباًgray hair وإقْلالاand poverty
I loaded my pale camels for them with wealth and youth,
I carried riches and youth to them,
and returned laden with gray hair and poverty.
Yet I returned white-haired and decreasing.
فإنْso if جرَتْflowed عَبَراتيmy tears لمnot يكنْbe عجَباًa wonder
فالخَدُّfor the cheek كالقاعlike a level plain يَجْلوreveals الماءَwater والآلاand mirage
So if my tears flow, that is no wonder:
If my tears flowed, it would be no wonder,
for the cheek, like a level plain, reveals water and mirage.
Since cheeks are like valleys that wash away sorrows and afflictions.
وزادنيand increased my أسَفاًsorrow أنّيthat I غداةَon the morning of غَدٍtomorrow
أُسامُI am forced ياO ابْنَson of المُعافَىal-Muʿāfā عنكaway from you تَرْحالاdeparture
And it deepens my sorrow that tomorrow morning
What adds to my grief is that tomorrow morning
I am forced, O son of al-Muʿāfā, to depart from you,
I will bid you farewell, son of well-being, and depart.
مُفارِقاًparting from منكin you نَفْساًa soul حُرّةًnoble ونُهىًand wisdom
جَمّاًabundant وعذْباًand sweet water منof الأخلاقcharacter سَلْسالاflowing smoothly
parting from your noble soul and wisdom
Leaving you a free soul and refined morals,
in abundance, and a sweet, flowing stream of character,
Lofty summits of glory, inaccessible,
وعالياًand a lofty height منamong هِضابِthe hills المَجْدِglory مُمتَنِعاًunassailable
وحالياًand adorned منamong رياضِthe gardens الفَضْلِvirtue مِحْلالاa hospitable resting place
and a lofty, unassailable height among the hills of glory,
Steep valleys of merit, unreachable,
and a lovely, hospitable meadow among the gardens of virtue.
The works of nights that try to restore the ruins of companionship.
ومنand among سجاياthe traits of اللّياليthe nights سَعْيهُاtheir striving أبَداًforever
حتّىuntil تَعودَbecome مَغانيthe dwellings of الأُنْسِfellowship أطلالاruins
And it is the nature of nights to strive forever
Glory will not remain in my mind or mature
until the dwellings of fellowship become ruins.
If I live in comfort far away from you.
لاmay not أصبحَbecome المجدُglory منamong باليmy thoughts ومنand among أربَىmy desires
إنif كنتُI am عنكَaway from you بسَيْريby my journey ناعِماًat ease بالاin mind
May glory be no part of my thoughts or desires
If it wasn't for the ample free time and isolation
if I am at peace in my departure from you.
That events and long separation brought about,
لولاwere it not for الفُرَيْخانِthe two little fledglings والوَكْرُand the nest الَّذيwhich بَرّحَتْdealt harshly
بهwith it الحوادثُcalamities والمُكْثُand the stay الّذيwhich طالاgrew long
Were it not for the two little fledglings and the nest ravaged
I would not have left a house for another,
by calamities, and the stay that has grown long,
Even if my eyes poured down humility.
لَماthen not تَبدّلْتُI exchanged منinstead of دارٍa dwelling تَحُلُّyou dwell بهاin it
داراًanother dwelling ولوeven if مُلِئتْwere filled عَيْنايَmy two eyes إبْلالاrecovery
I would not have exchanged a dwelling where you abide
Nor extend my hand, after attaching to you
for another, even were my eyes filled with restored well-being.
The train of the most high garments.
ولاnor سلَلْتُI withdrew يديmy hand منfrom بَعْدِafter ماthat عَلِقتْit grasped
لديكَin your presence منfrom بُردةِthe mantle العَلياءِeminence أذْيالاhems
Nor would I have withdrawn my hand after it had grasped,
How can I deny the blessings you bestowed,
at your side, the hems of eminence's mantle.
O most generous of all people in deeds?
وكيفand how أَجْحَدُcould I deny ماwhat أَولَيْتَyou bestowed منof نِعَمٍblessings
ياO أكرمَmost generous النّاسِpeople كُلِّall النّاسِpeople أفْعالاin deeds
And how could I deny the blessings you bestowed,
They went intending a matter, coveting glories,
O most generous of people—of all people—in deeds?
Hanging their hopes on them in vain.
سارواthey journeyed يُريدونَseeking أمراًa goal حاولواthey pursued أَمَماًa trifling thing
مُعَلِّقينَhanging بهon it الآمالَthe hopes ضُلاّلاastray
They journeyed seeking a goal, pursuing a trifling thing,
The greatest fortune in life is your proximity -
hanging their hopes upon it, astray.
Woe to him who missed it; what did he attain?
وأكبَرُand the greatest الحَظِّgood fortune فيin الأيّامِthe days قُربُكمُnearness to you
مَنwhoever فاتَهُit eluded him ليتَwould that شِعْريmy knowledge ماwhat الّذيthat which نالاhe gained
And the greatest fortune through the days is nearness to you;
whoever misses it—would that I knew what he gained!
