ولاand do not تَقولَنَّever say إلىto ماذاwhat نَدَبْhe summoned
ولا تَقولَنَّ إلى ماذا نَدَبْ
Help your brother, lending aid in whatever trouble befalls him.
Aid your brother when misfortunes befall
Never say, 'To what has he summoned me?'
And say not "For what purpose was he called?"

فالنَصرُ بالنّصلِ إذا الشَرُّ اقتَرَب
Help with a keen, unsheathed sword and an arm;
Help with a healing, well-chosen word
aid comes through the blade when evil draws near.
For aid with the blade is best when harm nears

Reach the caller before his glance returns;
Go quickly to one whose glance returns
a lion, whenever you stir it, leaps.
The lion springs only when you startle it

Turn the sword's tongue in answering him;
Wag the tongue of your sword in response
whoever is answered with words has not been answered.
For he who's answered with the tongue won't be answered

Draw a glance toward him and your sword together
Give him a glance and your sword together
from your eyes' sheaths and the sheath of the grooved blade.
From the eyelid of your eye and the eyelid of one polished

Answer the first of his two calls when he calls,
One whose prayers take precedence when he calls
if you would relieve him of one of his troubles.
Is best if you want to relieve one of his burdens

Little use is served, while the caller stands expectantly,
Song grew less and cries more strident
looking on, by your asking him, 'What is the cause?'
Looking to you to ask “What’s the cause?”

Draw the sword of al-Mashrafi then ask
begin by putting footsteps before speeches.
And begin by offering the staff before the sermon

If no summons drives a young man toward death,
If he won’t spring to defend the lad
to brave it for his ally, he will not be feared.
Then he plunged into danger without an ally

Advance upon death and live, for indeed
Resolve to die and you will live
a young man's day is written and recorded.
For the day of youth is predestined and prescribed

The fugitive's appointed end does not flee him;
No fleeing prolongs the inevitable
no, it pursues him harder when he flees.
But rather increases pursuit when one flees

Appointed deaths never leave their places;
Appointed terms do not move from their place
do not waste a chance to win remembrance.
So seize the chance to gain mention

Be the son of a day containing its pride
do not be content with counting noble forefathers.
Don’t settle for ancestors, no matter how noble

The noblest people, mother and father,

Are those who disdained to rise due to mother or father

Let a youth not be content, for all his lofty standing,
Let no worldly heights make you content
merely to be called 'noble in lineage.'
That it's said you are of noble origin

Pride stands unveiled when his father is reckoned,
Take pride when your father is called a traveller
but veils itself when the son is mentioned.
Until when the son is mentioned he is chosen

Clasp a fellow helper's two hands for victory;
Grasp the hand of an ally in victory
come with us to aim at the stars from close at hand.
And come, let us fling stars vigorously

In every land a partisan has emerged

What can one who wants wealth or knowledge
a noble man seeking wealth, or a man of learning?
Hope for from his time, possessing honor or propriety?

The earth is in chaos, completely

Not a handspan but with a war unleashed

and see nowhere on earth clear water untainted?
And see in the land no untainted place?

Merit in our time is abundance of money,
Superiority is superiority of money today
when people boast; today's lineage is possessions.
If they vie while lineage is now the bowstaff

How many reproachers when I departed from praising
I told each—even had he sought it at Abanayn—
I said to, if with two robes he'd proposed

I sent him away with a lump in his throat and never
anything wearier than the heart of an unloved lover.
Would you see one more weary than a loving heart that gets no love

Between Iraq and the mountains, wandering
is a weakling: I climb upward while he descends.
While fate gapes with fierce teeth

a tail must naturally face it.

I see only a presence to be avoided.

How can a way be found, with such dispositions
One exerts to ready the means of success
among them, to companionship gained by any means?
While the source, unless effort blesses, is strange

What time is resentful to one who resents?

Such pride of soul: its wild creature cannot be caught
Life passes, so what can be hoped for
except through honors and acts of closeness.
From gold that comes when life has gone?

And all this while my heart remembers
in my exile, but the water of my face was not spilled.
Days of friendship that did not end or get cut off

in pursuit of an aim neither nearby nor close at hand.
His cheek and mouth are wine and sweet

So charm undid propriety and snatched it away

One striving perfects the means of success;
Our hearts had been bound by a covenant now passed
yet fine bow-wood is willow unless good fortune helps.
To love, but it held firm and was transformed

He voices reproach when the wait grows long;
Can I convey to them, though passion carries me off
but does time ever appease one who reproaches it?
When sometimes the distant draws near?

My life was secretly one of joy
from gold that comes when life has gone?

Fate busied my eye away from me while I slept

His brow and temple-lock are dawn and darkness;
Taken back, after letting me enjoy it
his cheek and mouth are wine and bubbles.
While fate is worst when it takes back what it gave

Our two hearts, under a bygone pact, were
Days when the line of grey hair began
two towers of love; but I stood firm while he turned away.
And the raven of estrangement swooped

Will they bring me to them, though separation stretches far?
So today the sermon said to the eye “Stay awake!”
Perhaps the distant may turn back and draw near:
And remoteness said to the furrowed brow “Vigil keep!”

After my intimates who departed
almost slip free of their straps.

Crossing every wilderness wears away their humps,
A human eye not visited by any but them

Perhaps the inhabitants of my heart fancied
after distance? The world is only successive turns.
That I was secure from their absence or had endured

No! By Him who dispatched meteors to people
that fled when my locks began to gray.
Counted, apportioned in order

To the sky seven, and one
until the night of my head became morning, and it awoke.
To earth, with favor over the meteors

time is the worst reclaimer of what it gives.

nor had the crow of exile yet cawed.
It is praised by people of the moment it's granted

فِكْراً وقال النّأيُ للمَفْرِقِ شِب
Today misfortune tells the eye, 'Stay awake,'
The world is most fortunate, if fortunate it be
in thought; and distance tells the hair-parting, 'Turn gray.'
While the most likely prevails over its opposite

After my companions departed, I am left with—
One who loved glory until indeed
they left my patience plundered, like my wits—
He would have seized it from his father if not inherited

an eye's pupil that no one but they has visited
He disobeys the reproachers in bounty and only
without its dropping a curtain of tears and hiding.
Disobeyed the one censuring him, a lad of munificence

And many a kindness of a newborn not yet nurtured
numbered and apportioned by rank:
I have not seen one with finer behavior than he

for earth, whose excellence surpasses the stars.

In trailing a star to the horizon growing weary
the nights, whether dark or bright.
His actions praise him, and our poetry

A rain-star of bounty, through whom delegations seek rain;
Speaks well so we feel in it no burden
in his two hands there are always ten clouds.
No lofty sphere has turned in our words praising him

Rain did not give generously by nature; rather,
Unless its meaning were the celestial pole
a train of his robe once swept across the clouds.
When the warriors dyed their lances red

His pen, when he wrote, made them shy
praised by people for fortune that may be bestowed,
A gaze's glance, but with a single glance

that, had he not inherited it from his father, he would have seized it.

his reprovers but a youth enamored of giving.

he discarded the chess vizier and still prevailed.
