Have you not seen that Time writes what you dictate,

    and follows what you undertake in binding and loosing;

and that sons of hope are the adornment of sons of eminence,

and that benefactors are a treasure to men of merit?

Your countenance is to night travelers like the full moon in radiance,

and your right hand to supplicants like rain in drought.

    So, O sun—rather, O downpour—will you save me

and save my companions from the hand of sun and downpour,

with a humpbacked one that, if I make it kneel, falls before the youth,

prostrate, but if I rouse it, stands upon one leg?

It is not sinewy of foreleg in night travel,

but is made of fabric with tightly twisted threads.

It is one of the piebald; its back rises above its owners' heads,

and on the march it rises above the backs of horses and camels.

People deem it fit for pitching alone,

so it is pitched unceasingly on rough ground and smooth.

And it is a wonder that it has never once stood

unless bound with some sort of hobble.

Stranger than this is that its leg has

joints now easy to take apart and fit together.

No wonder that shade in which we dwell is freely given

by a youth whose bounty spreads ample shade over mankind.

We are a people whose fellowship Time has scattered,

and you are a man whose kindness gathers the scattered together.

And is there today any turning away from Sadid al-Hadra

for any among us who seeks kindness or justice?

So drive my mount nowhere but toward him,

and set my saddle down nowhere but at his gates.

For the road of praise leads only to the one

who dwells where the paths of hope converge.

May you be ransomed by a man who, if his tongue slips

into kindness, repairs the lapse of a promise with delay,

and by every miser whose palm miserliness has made its ally,

not knowing that wealth is replenished through giving.

I have seen you striving to buy praise with abundant wealth,

and preserve a place for earnestness in an age of frivolity.

You claim the wealthy for yourself and favor the destitute,

so one grows lean amid plenty, the other fat amid drought.

May the days never take their splendor from you,

for you are the adornment of unadorned Time.
