نَفسيmy soul فداؤكa ransom for you أيّهذاO you الصّاحبُthe friend
ياO مَنْone whom هواهُlove for him عليَّupon me حَقٌa duty واجبُbinding
May my soul be your ransom, O friend!
O you whose love is a binding duty upon me!
لمْwhy طالَhas lasted long تقصيريmy neglect فماyet not عاتَبْتنيyou reproached me
فأناso I am الغداةَthis morning مُقصّرٌneglectful ومُعاتِبand reproachful
Why has my neglect lasted so long without your reproaching me?
So this morning I am both neglectful and reproachful.
ومنَand among الدّليلthe evidence علىof مَلالكyour weariness أنّنيthat I
قدindeed غبْتُI have been absent أياماًfor days وماليَand I have no طالبseeker
And one sign that you have wearied of me is that I
have been absent for days, with no one seeking me.
وإذاand when رأيتَyou see العبْدَthe slave يَهربُhe flees ثُمَّthen لمnot
يُطلَبْhe is sought فَمَولَىthen the master of العَبْدِthe slave منهfrom him هاربfleeing
And when you see a slave flee, and then he is not
pursued, it is the slave’s master who is fleeing from him.
