إلى وَجْهِك الوضّاحِ طالَ امتدادُها
I wrote, my eye filled with longing for you;
long has its gaze stretched toward your radiant face.

And its pupil’s dearest wish is that,
in hope of reunion, the letter’s ink might be drawn from my own blackness.

تَقولُ إذا الأشواقُ جَدّ اشتِدادها
For my eye has envied my letter out of passionate longing,
saying, whenever yearning grows fierce:

“Will its black ink see you days from now,
on arrival, while my eye’s dark pupil still does not see you?”
