I thrilled at the returning phantom's visit,

    and its passage through a still stretch of night;

at my companions lying in the wilderness, with

    no pillows there but the forelegs of pale camels;

and at my sleeping beside the riding-camel in the dark,

    winding its spare rein about my forearm;

and at the unappointed visit of the beauty with the mole—

how lovely she was, had I not been asleep!

I have always either found without seeking

Layla, or sought her without finding.

May God not banish the phantom, for it is

the nearest meeting-place of those neighbors who have gone.

Longing's night visitor keeps returning to me

at the memory of a time I knew that will not return,

and of stolen union with a graceful, enchanting beloved,

whose beauties were my garden, and my eyes my scout.

I hid myself from him beneath my dripping tears,

as a thread lies hidden beneath strung choice pearls.

He embraced me not from love, but only because

he imagined the lovesick man was one of the necklaces.

You delighted, O my two eyes, in a glance,

and brought my heart to the bitterest watering-places.

O my eyes, leave my heart alone, for

it is tyranny for two to strive to kill one.

It is as though I set my eye as a snare

so that through it a herd of gazelles might become my hunters.

Whoever does not turn a discerning eye upon mankind

becomes, through those nearby, a target for distant foes' plots.

When I tested people, seeking among them

a trusted brother when hardships intervene,

I searched in both prosperity and adversity

and called among the tribes, 'Is there any helper?'

In what grieved me I saw only gloaters,

and in what delighted me I saw only enviers.

So I divorced myself from the friendship of all mankind

and went my way, turning to none but one.

And I returned to a soul bitter with pride,

    and patience against the days, promising success;

and a palace whose lodger rivals the stars,

though no builder's hand has built it:

one of those that effortlessly outstrip the wind when they set out,

pledged to bring the farthest distance near.

So I never ceased pursuing my resolves upon them,

to fulfill, in glory's presence, one of my appointments,

until we lent their gaze to the star's setting-place,

having kept pace on the road with the two Farqad stars' light.

And they said, 'The caravan's morning halt is Baghdad,'

while the long-necked camels tossed their reins.

And among us, the yearning lover's lips never ceased

kissing, in longing, a swift camel's footpads.

Too little would be the fashioning of pure-gold bracelets

for the forelegs of mounts bound for Iraq.

They visit in al-Zawra a house of noble deeds,

whose foundations the Lord of the Throne undertook to raise:

prophetic stations traced out for guidance,

belonging to a radiant nobleman of the house of prophethood.

When the festival crowds depart from them,

the marks of prostrate faces pattern the earth's dust.

When delegations seek him, they lay down their travel-gear

before the best host a visitor could approach.

An imam who, though distant from our eyes,

    is near in helping us attain our aims;

just as you know that God beholds creation

in His majesty, though no creature beholds Him.

A true caliph: no one harbors opposition to him

except a traitor who strays from religion's law.

And al-Mustazhir, supported by God in championing His religion,

    wearing together the twin armors of valor and praiseworthy deeds;

one of the later-born, yet foremost toward the heights,

when merit reveals who is ruled and who rules.

in rising fortune climbing the peaks of glory,

and in kingship paying homage in prophethood's court—

how noble the host, and how noble the visitor!

Never have two lucky stars more fortunate than these been joined

for faith or worldly life, within any witness's memory.

God bless the eyes of one who saw the delegation coming,

with good fortune, appearing before watchful eyes.

to a guardian defending God's domain.

The clouds had sprinkled the earth for his horses

at dawn, in honor of those spectacles.

Did you not see how the earth strutted proudly

at the ever-growing beauty she displayed?

And embroidery was fastened over her, until she seemed,

newly unveiled, one of the fair, secluded maidens.

And in the air, a thicket interlaced with spearheads,

yet sheltering the lions of the lances.

The bright Indian blades entered consecration like a pilgrim held back,

in armored warriors' hands, except that they did not fight.

I swear: had they not pledged the enemies' blood

as ransom for themselves, they would not have obeyed a sheather's hand.

O guardian of the world and religion, keeping watch

    like a maned lion crouching where the roads converge;

whose bounty is reserved for every seeker,

whose love is a duty for every worshipper:

for without that love, God does not accept

    a worshipper's prayer or a warrior's jihad.

A disease of hypocrisy has emerged for one to excise,

and men's heads have ripened for a reaper.

Rise for God with a rising like al-Mu'tasim's,

to quench the twin fires of the clamoring foe and the schemer.

nor does your firestick fail to kindle in aiding guidance.

Your cavalry, in the lands' east and west,

are necklaces round the necks of the fortresses they approach.

They plunge into battle gray-white from bright blades alone,

and emerge chestnut-red with clotted blood.

I bear witness: you have tended a people well,

keeping a sleepless eye in their defense.

and never shoot at your foes except with a piercing shaft.

your station, and nothing can add to it,

though falling short, express a striver's utmost effort.

O you before whom the veils of majesty stand,

what reaches you from us is our sincerest devotion.

Your dwellings are the circling-ground of seekers, just as

your virtues there are forever the circling-ground of poems.

Though my absence from the Kaaba of praise has been long,

now is the time for far-traveling, free-roaming verses.

and another is gagged with stones.

surpasses the sword of an armored warrior in combat.

If your servant is honored with patronage, it is customary

for warriors to adorn their iron swords.

I ask only acceptance, and merely

    seek clear proofs of it.

You have lavished favors, Commander of the Faithful,

for which my abundant praises are but little.

whose hands have lavished favors, first given and renewed.

For He who made the world a paradise through your reign

may fittingly grant you the life of an immortal.
