حَلفْتُI swore بمَعْشَرٍby a company راحُواthey set out حَجيجاًas pilgrims
ورامُواand they sought منfrom أقاصيthe farthest reaches of الأرضِthe earth نُقْلَهْa journey
I swore by a company who set out as pilgrims,
And sought to journey from the earth’s farthest reaches,
وشَدّواand they fastened كُلَّevery رَحْلٍcamel-saddle للمَطاياto the riding camels
علىin عَجَلٍhaste وحَلُّواand they untied كُلَّevery عُقْلَهhobble
And fastened every saddle upon the riding camels
In haste, and untied every hobble,
وسارواand they traveled نحوَtoward بَيْتِthe House of اللهِGod حتّىuntil
أناخواthey made kneel كُلَّevery حَرْفٍlean she-camel مثْلَlike هِقْلَهa female ostrich
And traveled toward the House of God until
They made every lean she-camel, like a female ostrich, kneel:
لوَif انّكَthat you ياO وليُّWali خطَطْتَyou penned سَطْراًa line
وكنتَand you were مُعاصِراًcontemporary with أبناءَthe sons of مُقْلَهMuqla
If you, O Wali, had penned a line
And been a contemporary of the sons of Muqla,
لَعَضّواthey would have bitten فيin فِنائَكyour courtyard كُلَّevery كَفٍّhand
وغَضُّواand they would have lowered مِنout of حَيائكَshame before you كُلَّevery مُقْلَهeye
They would have bitten every hand in your courtyard
And lowered every eye in shame before you.
