Ease up on yourself, though you have pondered long.
Lower yourself even if you are haughty in contemplation
For you have reproached a man already much reproached.
For you have certainly wronged the most wronged of men

You made me despair of pleasing you, so you maltreated me
Would that he who lacked kindness had at least shown grace.
If only the ungenerous would pretend to be generous

What do you want with someone whose requests are denied?
Denied satisfaction in a need, he sought consolation.
Excuses abound when desires go unsatisfied

If you would only ignite them instead of extinguishing them

And keep the two silks safe from decay

Our faces glisten without water or kohl

The miser left hoarding his surplus wealth
and demands that the free man's honor debase itself.
And bartering the honor of the noble, too stingy to give

my onslaught; a learned man's last resort is to act rashly.
Since the wise man's utmost is obscurity

He fancies the red leather shields a garden
and regards the brown spear shaft as a place for kisses.
And deems the dark mail coats to be kissed

so he refuses to bear time's oppression.
And refuses to bear the oppression of fate

A people whom, when war is kindled, squadrons bear off

when he gazes, he snatches up the fleeing male ostrich.
And a frightened oryx is snatched when it brays

And comes pacing slowly ahead of his shadow

you would think his day of battle embodied in him.
Look bound for battle, destined for spears

resembling his namesake, pure and smooth-flowing wine.
That refuses to be shod, too proud for shoes

and he has borrowed from night a trailing veil.
That you imagine them coupled together

cutting through deepest night beneath the dust.

The competing horse's strides draw close behind him,
Or one whose complexion is sallow - cracks run
so you think him fettered by his white stockings.
Through his flanks like lightning in dark clouds
أوor أبلَقٍa piebald يَسْبِيcaptivates العيونَthe eyes إذاwhen بداhe appears
منfrom تحتِbeneath فارسهِhis rider الكَمِيّthe armored warrior مُجَوِّلاwheeling
Or a piebald that captures the eyes when he appears,
The two threads of his night and day intertwined
wheeling beneath his armored rider,
Are torn apart and sown together for him
مثْلِlike الجَهامِa rainless cloud تَشقَّقتْsplit open أحضانهits flanks
بَرْقاًwith lightning وراحand became لهfor him شَمالُكyour left hand شَمْألاa north wind
like a rainless cloud whose flanks have split
So that you see the horizon's red glow on him
with lightning, while your left hand becomes his north wind.
While his hands are the blowing wind, his hooves granite stones
وكأنّand as though خَيْطَيْthe two threads لَيلهof his night ونهارِهand his day

قدhad قُطِّعَاbeen cut مزَقاًinto shreds عليهupon him ووُصِّلاand joined together
As though the two threads of his night and day
With the likes of them and their equals I seek glory
were cut into shreds upon him and pieced together.
And with the racers' gallop and warriors' blows
فبِمثْلهِنّso with steeds like them ومثْلِهمand men like them أَرميI assail العِداthe foes

With steeds like these and men like those, I assail my foes,
How long will this stance persist in lifelessness
and by their galloping and the men's blows I seek high rank.
While fate brings the seeker all that he hopes for?
كمhow long ذاthis المُقامُstay علىin الخُمولِobscurity تَلوُّماًlingering
والدّهرُwhile time مُبلِغُbrings طالبٍa seeker ماwhat أَمَّلاhe hoped for
How long must I linger here in obscurity,
Leave the darling to her plotting and say to her:
when time brings the seeker what he hopes for?
"Adorn my mare's forelock, not my own!"
فدَعِso leave العقيلةَthe noble lady للثّواءِto stay وقُلْand say لهاto her

Leave the noble lady to stay, and say to her:
Isfahan grew accustomed to hosting me and so
Untie my mount's tether—not out of aversion.
Pitched its tents without me needing to wander
أَلِفَتْgrew accustomed to مُقاميَmy staying أصفهانُIsfahan فأنشبَتْso she fastened

Isfahan grew used to my stay and fastened
I cannot sneak away from its lands
her maw upon me, barring my departure.
As if my words were trapped inside your mouth
لاnot أستطيعُI can تَسلُّلاًslipping away منfrom أرضِهاher land
حتّىuntil كأنّيas though I were فيon لسانِكyour tongue قولُthe saying لا'no'
I cannot slip away from her land,
For it is he who gives speech its free rein
as though I were the word 'no' upon your tongue.
And perfects rhetoric like none other
وهوand he is المُملِّكُthe one granting control للكلامِto speech عنانَهَits reins

He is the one who grants speech its reins,
O pride of the writers of this age, hear the prayer
and the one who strikes the joint precisely in eloquence.
Of one whose misfortunes have shackled him
ياO مَنْyou whose تَقابَلmeet فيin العُلاloftiness أطْرافُهhis family branches

O you whose family branches meet in loftiness,
Long have I been absent, now I come to you burdened
until you stand at its center, noble in paternal and maternal kin.
Though perhaps the companion wearies and wears

Your literary arts and sciences are equally balanced,
I, who whether blamed or unblamed
and you possess each, fully accomplished.
Rely on none but you in times of need

The pens glory in you whenever you turn them,
Gaze upon days whose magnanimity is a shining sun
as though they had been made fingers for your hand.
That makes all other stars fade for mankind

Each pours forth gifts, as though
And listen to my musings, though to you
diverting a stream from their overflowing sea.
They may seem too inconsequential to consider

Moist-tongued, it spreads a hidden secret,
Do not let your abundant gifts preclude
empty-hearted, it urges forth streaming tears.
My meager offering from being accepted

With a wondrous eye, for which its sheet supplies
Glory is not content with your merit alone
a face that beams when the eye pours its tears upon it.
Until you are the noble giver to the noble gift
ياO فخْرَpride كُتّابِof the scribes الزّمانِof the age دُعاءَthe plea مَنْof one who

O pride of the age's scribes, hear the plea of one
Forgive my feeble efforts, for it is in my nature
upon whom his calamities have laid their heavy breast.
When weaving praises to sometimes falter
قدindeed غبْتُI was absent حَوْلاًa year ثُمّthen جئتُI came مُكلِّفاًimposing burdens
ولربّماand often ثَقُلَbecame burdensome الجليسُthe companion وثَقّلاand burdened others
I was absent a year, then came imposing burdens,
I have suffered much injustice from time
and a companion may be burdensome and burden others.
That lost all favor for the generous patron
وأناand I am الّذيthe one who إمّاwhenever تُلمُّbefalls مُلِمّةٌa calamity
لمnot تُلْفنيyou found me إلاّexcept عليكَon you مُعَوِّلاrelying
I am the one whom, whenever a calamity strikes,
To them, my poetry is like an ugly mirror
you find relying on you alone.
And so I restrain my heart from seeking to polish it
فاطْلُعْso rise مدَىthroughout الأيّامِthe days شَمْسَas a sun مَكارمٍof generous deeds

Rise throughout the days as a sun of generous deeds
that makes mankind forget their setting stars.

And hear an embellished poem I have breathed forth, though
it has become, in your eyes, too slight to ponder.

لقليلِfor the little ماthat which أَهدَيْتُI offered أنto تَتقَبّلاyou accept
Let not the abundance of what you have been given
prevent you from accepting the little I have offered.

حتّىuntil تكونَyou are الفاضِلَthe excellent man المُتفَضّلاthe generous benefactor
For glory is not satisfied with your excellence alone,
until you are both excellent and generous.
واعذِرْand pardon علىfor جُهْدِthe utmost effort المُقلِّof the poor man فإنّfor indeed ليI have

Excuse the poor man's utmost effort, for mine is
a talent that weaves loosely whenever it weaves praises.

For time has afflicted me with a band
who lack—far be it from you—a noble, generous man.
شِعْريmy poetry كمِرآةِlike the mirror القبيحةِof an ugly woman عندَهمْin their eyes

To them, my poetry is like an ugly woman's mirror,
so I keep my imagination from polishing it.
