If your phantom wished, after God I could be revived

by a brief visit from it, from time to time.

Rather, if you wished, while night's wing is thick with darkness,

and the encampment's people are some asleep, some awake,

you could veil yourself, O moon of the horizons, in clouds of my breath,

and travel toward me, unseen by any eyes.

For not a single night since I last met you

have my eyes lacked a cloud pouring tears.

No—rather, if you wish, permit me to visit you; and

my sickness guarantees my concealment from all eyes.

Love has left you only a specter of me among mankind,

which, weighed against a phantom, would have no advantage.

My very form is almost drawn toward a sleeper's bed

at night, if his drowsy eye dreams of me.

How can we reach a union in which we delight,

healing the thirst of a parched, love-crazed heart?

Between us and Layla, whenever we seek to visit her,

    stand a slanderer's tongue or a jealous man's sword.

O you who ask me—love has many ways of striking men down—

how my heart was maddened that day at Na'man:

the bird of my heart was caught, while it wandered

unafraid, at morning, in the garden of faces,

by a fierce raptor from her glance, whose flight feathers are the

lashes, and whose two eyelids are its wings.

O you who brandish the sword of a glance, by which my blood was shed unavenged,

despite the multitude of my supporters and helpers!

How wondrous a sword of a glance! He never girds it on

for killing unless his two temple-locks are its sword-belts.

He kills me when he draws away, and resurrects me

with his unsheathed cheek, when he returns to meet me.

when sleep sews eyelids to eyelids?

All night, out of generosity, it frees the prisoners of tears

upon my cheek, though itself a captive in love's bondage.

in days when no human being shows loyalty.

My shaft was bent, though once it had been straightened,

by time, which is only a destroyer and a builder.

Do not marvel at a man's head bursting into flame

when his heart kindles within him a fire of sorrows.

    لقد تَصافحَ في خَدّي البياضان

    My cheek had scarcely darkened before hastily turning white;

on my cheek the two whitenesses have clasped hands.

even if estrangement replaces union for me,

even if you pay everyone's debts in full,

even if you refuse me anything but delay and evasion.

How could I complain of the ugliness of your treatment of me,

even if it drove sleep from me and tormented me?

For it was only the ugliness of your conduct that freed me

from everything into which your face's beauty cast me.

counted a treacherous friend of mine as treacherous.

I would have had no way to find consolation for his loss.

Had his kindness been unalloyed, and he left me,

my soul would then have left my body for his sake.

a base man's provisions, and fold an empty, hungry belly.

when he wished to write a heading for him,

light he bestowed upon far and near?

and his brother: they are two pillars of honor.

beside a young man delighted by guests:
