O you who depart from my sight in good fortune,

    and dwell among my thoughts,

if ever my gaze is without you,

my inmost thoughts are not without you.

You lodged me in a welcoming home,

a gathering place for seekers and visitors,

and in a lush garden whose open court

is a delight for ears and eyes.

For it is your absence, and nothing else,

    that occupies my innermost thoughts.

So through your home we are in paradise—

yes, and through your absence, in fire.

So have you heard of a young man dwelling

in fire and paradise within one home?

When the horses of my longing for you began

to gallop on the racecourse of my thoughts,

my pen raced ahead to you—

oh, how I envy the racing pen!

    وليس بِدْعاً طاعةُ الباري

    I sharpened it, and it yielded to me willingly;

and obedience to one's maker is nothing strange.

For me it stood on its head and raced upon it,

swift as the flash of lightning passing through the night.

So my heart wished—with desert wastes between us,

the remoteness of my lands exhausting the mounts—

that they were my writing sheet, and that I

might match my pen in traveling.

Indeed, my lords, if I described the longing

since my home grew distant from yours,

my blank pages [reading uncertain] would, if made to hold

the least of it, stretch the length of my travels.

When shall I see the night of my separation from you

cleft by a dawn breaking into brightness?

And on what day will my eye awaken

with your radiance as its kohl?

May my soul ransom you, O Diya al-Huda (Light of Guidance),

a noble man who brings joy to the freeborn!

    بل زاد كُلُّ بك إذْكاري

    The noble among humankind have not distracted me from you;

rather, each has increased my remembrance of you.

I see no one like you, however long

I join highlands to lowlands in my wandering.

So, O ally of generosity, you are never

anything but a dweller in my innermost thoughts.

Toward you I began my migration,

and you were among my most generous supporters.

So, Abu Nasr, aid my heart against

    two armies: longing and thoughts,

with reinforcements you send at once,

from you—even if only five lines.
