    The shepherds have departed, yet I have not quenched my thirst.

    Will this water's heart not falter?

    فلقد أطَلْتُ ولم يَنَلْكَ رِشائي

    O water, behold, I am leaving your precincts;

    for I have lingered long, yet my well-rope has not reached you.

    How long must my leaving and coming to water be alike,

    and how long must I lament the burning in my entrails?

    أفليس يُوجَد فيك قَطْرُ حَياء

    I see you formed from gathered drops of rain;

    is there not a drop of shame within you?

    أغديرُ رِيٍّ أم غَديرُ رِياء

    You quench one who has drunk already, yet leave another parched;

    are you a pool of refreshment, or a pool of mere show?

    I see, O water, that your face is clear,

    but your soul is devoid of purity.

    بل ليس عندَك حُرمةُ الفُضلاء

    There is no lack of bounty in you for those who drink you;

    rather, you have no regard for men of merit.

    May the clouds stint you as you unjustly stinted me,

    and shun your heights, as you have long shunned me.

    And when the waters turn turquoise-green,

    may your shores remain unembroidered.

    And when spring clothes the lands in its striped cloaks,

    may the woven fabrics of the rains pass you by.

    I shall surely proclaim your evil deed aloud,

    my cry ringing in the East and the farthest West.

    And I shall compose what is more delicate than you to hear:

    words more beautiful, too, on the page to the eye.

    And I shall fill the earth with news that my waterskins

    were sent away from you without being filled.

    And I shall tell the people, until they know—

    the near and close at hand, with the distant and far away.

    What harm would it have done you to earn my praises?

    Rather, what do you gain by earning my satire,

    in every poem traveling on the lips of humankind,

    urging the caravan's mounts onward with such a stirring chant?

    I am the jurists' greatest poet, beyond dispute,

    in this age—or I am the poets' greatest jurist.

    My poetry, whenever I speak it, is repeated by all,

    spontaneously, not through labored recitation.

    Like a voice beneath the mountains' overhangs, when raised,

    it stirs answering echoes for the ear.
