Live on for glory, rejoicing in the shade of honor,
and slaying your foes with the blades of resolve.
ياO مَنyou who إذاwhen رَضيَhe is pleased انْهلّتْpoured down غَمامَتُهhis cloud
جُوداًbounty وبُؤساًand misery علىupon قَومٍa people إذاwhen سَخِطاhe grew angry
O you whose cloud, when you are pleased, pours down
bounty, and misery upon a people when you are angered.
فوقabove السَحابِthe clouds سَماحاًin generosity والسِّماكِand al-Simak عُلاًin loftiness
والسّيفِand the sword رأياًin judgment وأحداثِand the calamities of الزّمانِtime سُطاin might
Above the clouds in generosity, and al-Simak in loftiness,
and the sword in judgment, and Time’s calamities in might.
قدindeed قلتُI said والدّهرُand time كالمُبديlike one showing لناto us خَجَلاًshame
بهover it علىdespite حَمدِناour praise عُقْبَىin the wake of الّذيwhat فَرَطاhad happened
I said, as Time seemed to show us shame,
despite our praise, in the wake of what had happened:
منof عَثرةٍa stumble لمnot تكُنْwas بالرّأيِthrough judgment منْكon your part ولاnor

It was no stumble caused by your judgment, nor
by your fortune—far be it!—that you should deem the matter grave;

rather, a footfall struck the earth in haste,
with one whose hand’s dew had freely showered its people,

ومالَand inclined عِطْفاهُhis two sides الرّاجيthe hopeful petitioner بهاthrough them فَعَطاso he reached out
one stirred to generosity, whose gifts welled forth from him,
and his shoulders bent toward the hopeful, who reached for those gifts,

like the bending of a bough, its fruit-laden part touching earth,
bowing beneath its burden, its fruit slipping down.

He is the dew, and Time the garden he visited at dawn,
until its beauty became mingled with fragrance.

فلاso do not يَرعْكَalarm you إذاwhen قيلَit is said النّدىَthe dew سَقَطاhas fallen
If the garden delights you, its borders polished bright,
do not be alarmed when it is said, ‘The dew has fallen.’

Nor let your ear hastily spit out that wording,
so long as the meaning, rightly grasped, is pleasing.

إذwhen الزّمانُtime لسَيفِthe sword of الحادثِcalamity اخْتَرطاhas unsheathed
God be praised for such a man as you, Abu Abd al-Ilah,
when Time has unsheathed the sword of calamity.

He has arrows which, when fletched by his fingertips,
kill his foes outright—may those arrows never reach them unfletched.
غديرُa pool of جُودٍbounty متىwhenever ماever يَأتcomes وارِدُهone seeking its water

A pool of bounty: whenever one comes to drink from it,
you hear the birds of rhyme clamoring around it.

إلىtoward العُلاglory مُدْنِياًbringing near منهاof it الّذيwhat شَحَطاwas far away
How often he has mounted a star, his foot unwearied,
toward glory, bringing its farthest reaches near.

إلىto أعاليthe highest parts of ثناياthe passes of المَجْدِglory ماnot هَبَطاhe descended
Radiant: since his noble ancestry bore him upward
to the highest passes of glory, he has never descended.
فاْعْذِرْso excuse علىfor خَطْوِهhis step إنif كانhe had أخطأهاmissed it

فاللهُfor God خَطَّhas marked out لأفياءِfor the shades of العُلاglory خِططاcourses
So excuse his step, if he has missed his footing,
for God has mapped out paths to the shades of glory.
اِعتادَgrew accustomed أنto يَطأَtread الأفلاكَthe celestial spheres أخمَصُهthe arch of his foot
فماso he did not دَرىknow عندupon وَطْءtreading الأرضِthe earth كيفhow يَطاto step
The arch of his foot is used to treading the celestial spheres,
so, when treading earth, he did not know how to step.

Since his lofty heel would accept no paths but those
above the stars, it could only falter in its steps.

Far be it from your age, O succor of the worthy, that
your sandal should slip, deliberately or by mistake.

How could it, when from you it took on light by which it shone,
after it had been stumbling blindly in the darkness?
ياO مَنyou who غداbecame الحَمدُpraise مُلْقىًcast down فيin الثّرىthe dust دُرراًpearls

ولمand not يُصادَفْwas found إلىuntil أنْthat جاءhe came مُلْتَقِطاas a gatherer
O you—praise lay cast as pearls in the dust,
and went unfound until you came to gather it.

فشَبَّso grew young ماwhat شابَhad grown gray منof فِكْريmy thought وماand what شَمَطاhad become hoary
And you who restored dew’s moisture to the bough of excellence,
so what had grown gray and hoary in my thought grew young again.

On the farthest limit, hoping to attain it, I fixed
my gaze, and would accept no middling wish.

And you emboldened me, until I grew bold through the way
you honored me, and sought an extravagant goal.

Water is gathered in from its edges; and when
you spread some out and it finds open space, it spreads.

So meet your foes, humbling them, while your bounty, on
the peaks of your glory, stays tethered to the steed of praise,

they see dawn’s gray hair streaking the darkness.
