تَدري باللهِ ما يَقولُ الشّمْعُ

تَدري باللهِ ما يَقولُ الشّمْعُ

للنّارِ وقد علاه منها اللّمْعُ

Do you know, by God, what the candle says

Do you know what the candle says

to the fire, whose glow has risen above it?

To the fire when its flame flares high?

الطّاعةُ فيّ للهوَى والسّمْعُ

الطّاعةُ فيّ للهوَى والسّمْعُ

ما دام لك اللّمْعُ فمنّي الدَّمْع

ما دام لك اللّمْعُ فمنّي الدَّمْع

“In me are obedience and hearkening to love;

“Obedience to passion is in me

As long as the glow is yours, the tears are mine.”

And hearing, as long as your light is in my eye"
