O who will help a lovesick man clinging to the fringes of hope,
whom longing keeps all night curled over burning grief?

Indeed, those who set off at dawn with the pale camels and departed
told my tears, "Set off along our tracks!"

My tears increase in proportion to their journey,
as bright stars multiply on the horizon after sunset.

I have not forgotten them, the tribe's howdahs moving,
racing across the plain like a close-packed, far-stretching host.

From the right of al-Zawra hill, a herd of oryx
moved in bands toward al-Ja'wa hill.

They shoot sidelong at heroes with their eyes,
while their people guard them, shooting into eyes.

Each a fair woman in red beneath canopies,
as the sun's face lies hidden in twilight's glow.

She turned away, wary of tale-bearers, and glanced back
with a coquettish eye from a fresh, radiant face.

وليسyet there is no فيin الحُبِّlove قَطْعُcutting off الصَّبِّthe lovesick man بالسَّرَقfor theft
She cut me off because I stole a glance at her;
yet in love no lover is cut off for theft.

My friend complains to me of the times I live in—how strange!
And how can the merely wet seek rescue from the drowned?

Take heart, for Time is full of changes,
and every gathering is destined one day for parting.

Warn the oppressor what his oppression brings in the end,
and tell the drunkard, "Patience: if you live, you will sober up."
إنّاindeed we لفيare surely in زمَنٍan age مَلآنَbrimming منwith فِتَنٍturmoil

We are indeed in an age brimming with turmoil,
so none is blamed in it for brimming with fear.

And there are people whose evil is near, while their good
is as far as night's full moon from arms stretched to embrace it.

A dwelling empty of company drew me to them;
how often has the thirsty drunk from muddy water!

Tell him whose person is secluded in the palace,
while his honor lies forever cast upon the roads:
يَشْريhe buys الثّناءَpraise ولاbut does not يُعْطيgive بهfor it ثمناًa price

وذاكand that مَبلَغُis the limit of رأْيِthe judgment of الجاهلِthe ignorant الحَمِقfool
he buys praise but pays no price for it,
and that is the limit of an ignorant fool's judgment.

God curse you, branches bare
of dew, fruit, shade, and leaves!

When we praise them, they are not roused to generosity;
and if we leave them alone, they sleep nursing resentment.

And when they turn aloof, we draw out their rancor
with every poem, like pearls strung in order.

Praises to ward off evil—you would take them for
charms against scorpions clothing the faces of the pages.

Your necks are laden with my pearls, yet you have not—
and I thank God—the slightest claim of favor upon my neck.

And we were not created doves to delight you
with plaintive song while wearing collars made of rags.

By God, were I not, despite their baseness, guarding
those two noble things, my soul and my character,

words to disgrace them would surely travel far,
which I let slip from the edges of an eloquent tongue.

When I unleash their wild verses against a reputation,
they withdraw, leaving it in strips and tatters.

People's sides shake with delight at them,
except those they make spend the night in disquiet.

Like a sword, praised by all but the one it kills
on the day of combat, when it reddens with gore.
