    فأقلِلْ عتابَ السَّهم في خَطأ الرّامي

    My fortunes are governed by the dictates of my days;

so lessen your blame of the arrow for the archer's error.

For if the days of time obeyed me,

I would spend them only in your exalted assembly.

But the calamities that time visits upon me

make my visits few, despite my longing.

Yet my mention of his excellence while absent

leads into praise whose fragrance ever grows.

And praise whose radiant verses, whenever I recite them,

are passed like gifts from mouth to mouth.

How can I endure your absence, you whose meeting

is the vanguard of aid against the warfare of my days?

Nor have I departed from a former pledge of welcome,

that my reproachers might gloat over me—far be that from your nobility!

I am not among those who seek a smile through abasement,

or praise kings like worshippers of idols.

For anyone who frequents one of them after you

is like one who, in religion, buys unbelief with Islam.

Most of these people are idle chatter, as though,

when they pass through the ear, they were a stammerer's repeated t-sounds.

In their ignorance they are cattle, grazing; and only

a companion of abasement toils for the bounty of cattle.

They have no use except to serve as ransom,

even if they come to it, willingly or under compulsion.

    فما في فِدَى النّاسِ إيّاك من ذام

    Yes, God ransomed the one destined for sacrifice with their like;

so there is no shame in people serving as your ransom.

When every lord boasts to the utmost of his kinsmen,

you are the mightiest of men through your servants' support.

They pleaded their learning, and you rewarded them,

as though through it they had pleaded ties of kinship.

Will you revive my crumbling bones with a glance

of renewed kindness, and restore my decayed remains?

And spare me repeated asking? For you can see

my faltering there, though my mind creates poetry.

I am indeed one who conceals fire within his breast,

so my restraint may keep the water of honor clear in my face.

If abasement appears in attaining wealth,

may my eyes never be bereft of my dignity and my poverty.

    ولا يَهْدِمُ العَلياءَ مُجْتاب إهدام

    How often we bear praise, a wealthy man's adornment;

a wearer of rags does not bring high honor low.

I fled with my hopes from all those people

to a bold defender of a neighbor's right to protection:

the greatest of mankind in decisive judgment and thought,

and their most faithful in every untying and binding.

How long, then, must I be led like a steed at another's side,

with neither the glory of a gallop nor the ease of rest?

The slightest of my worries fills my whole heart,

and the shortest of my days in the year is like a year.

If my hand possessed a shield for my face,

I would have preceded men admitted through the door before me.

Perhaps Kamal al-Mulk will once feel moved

to let his bounty reach completion.

But for him, beyond their dwellings would never have strayed

my mounts, nor among other inhabitants my thoughts.

Nor would I question the camel-driver behind my mounts:

‘Where are they bound by night, despite their weariness, O ʿAm?’

Where the riders' necks droop with drowsiness,

their heads hovering above the forks of the camel-saddles,

on every white camel that leaves the eye behind,

journeying into Najd at evening and into Tihama at dawn.

When the brown whip sweeps around to strike,

lightning flashes where he meets it with a burst of speed.

I came to you stripped of every means of approach,

my tears streaming down my cheeks for my shortcomings.

You have been a Kaaba for seekers of their goals,

so I approached it only in the garb of consecration.

I hope to return from it, through its high standing,

    after consecration, clothed in honor.

Be to me as I trust you will, and seize the chance

that makes this gratitude endure year after year.

And if it is the other outcome, which I do not deserve,

then count my lingering life an owl flown among owls.

Do not weep in regret for the noble man after I am gone,

when no slain man can compensate for Bistam.

May our lord the minister ever endure, and at his gate

may mouths forever occupy the places of feet.

And may you remain forever beneath the shade of his counsel,

governing provinces through the strokes of pens,

trained in generosity, valor, and high honor

    for every deed of glory, vengeance, and bounty;

and through blades drawn in the hand, each finely sharpened,

with an edge that cuts clean through, a trenchant sword in battle.

    وما السّيفُ إلاّ حِليةُ الحاملِ الحامي

    You defended high honor with it when you bore it;

and the sword is only the adornment of the defender who bears it.
