He lent his ears to his reproachers,

And withdrew with the secrets of his love-distraught heart.

And a festival of longing revisited him at the campsite,

Its crescent had risen from a trench around a tent.

Lovesick, far from the one he loves, he was stirred to longing

By his dawn gaze upon his beloved's ruins.

He asked the beloved's grounds about him and listened to the echo,

So it might answer; it repeated his words.

He called to it: 'Where, I wonder, is the resting place of his saddlebags?'

So it answered: 'Where, I wonder, is the resting place of his saddlebags?'

My soul be ransom for the one bidding me farewell with a gesture,

And the eye journeys on, driven by his haste.

    فمتَى يَعودُ القَلبُ لاسْتِقْباله

    As for the heart, it went along to see him off;

So when will the heart return to welcome him?
