أتَعرِفُ أعلَى اللهُ أمرَكَ أمرَها

أتَعرِفُ أعلَى اللهُ أمرَكَ أمرَها

لديكَ وإهْدائي إليكَ المُنَظَّما

لديكَ وإهْدائي إليكَ المُنَظَّما

Are you aware—may God exalt your station—of its standing

Do you know if God ordained your affair or hers?

with you, and of my gift to you of crafted verse,

I have for you my gift and ode to you,

ورَفْعَ يَدي أدعو إلى الله مُخْلصاً

ورَفْعَ يَدي أدعو إلى الله مُخْلصاً

بعَوْدِكَ من رَيْبِ الزَّمانِ مُسلَّما

بعَوْدِكَ من رَيْبِ الزَّمانِ مُسلَّما

and of my raising my hand, praying sincerely to God

And raising my hands I sincerely pray to God

for your safe return from the vicissitudes of time?

For your return from the ills of time, resigned.

رَجَوْتُ لكَ العلْيا ولي عند الغِنَى

رَجَوْتُ لكَ العلْيا ولي عند الغِنَى

رَجاءً فكلتا الحالَتَيْنِ مُقَسِّما

رَجاءً فكلتا الحالَتَيْنِ مُقَسِّما

I hoped for you high station, and for myself, in prosperity,

For you I hoped for glory, and for me in poverty,

a hope—thus dividing my hopes between the two conditions.

Hoping for both fates divided and assigned.

فأمّا الّذي أمّلتَ فيه فنِلْتَهُ

فأمّا الّذي أمّلتَ فيه فنِلْتَهُ

وأمّا الّذي أمّلْتُ فيكَ فَرُبَّما

وأمّا الّذي أمّلْتُ فيكَ فَرُبَّما

As for what you hoped for from Him, you have attained it;

As for what you hoped for, you attained it,

but as for what I hoped for from you—perhaps.

As for what I hoped in you, perhaps someday.
