ولقدand indeed أقولُI say لشَمعةٍto a candle نُصِبَتْwas set up لناfor us
وسُتورُand the veils جُنحِthe darkness اللّيلِof the night ذاتُhaving جُنوحِan inclination
And indeed I say to a candle set up for us,
Indeed I say to a candle lit for us,
while the veils of night’s darkness droop:
And the wings of night spread their wings,
أناI مَنthe one who يَحِنُّyearns إلىfor الأحبّةِthe loved ones قَلْبُهhis heart
ولكand for you البُكاءweeping بدَمْعِكِwith your tears المَسفْوحpoured forth
“I am the one whose heart yearns for loved ones,
My heart yearns for loved ones,
yet yours is the weeping, with your streaming tears.”
While you cry with your flowing tears.
قالتْshe said عَجِلْتَyou hastened إلىto المَلامِreproach مُسارِعاًhurrying
فاسمَعْso listen بيانَthe explanation حَدِيثيَmy story المَشْروحset out in full
She said, “You hastened headlong to reproach;
You rushed to blame hastily,
so hear my story’s explanation, set out in full.
So listen to the clear words I speak,
أُفرِدْتُI was separated مِنfrom إلْفٍa companion شَهِيًdelightful وَصْلُهunion with him
حُلْوِsweet الجَنَىthe yield عَذِبِpleasant المذاقِthe taste صَريحpure
I was parted from a companion whose union was delightful,
I was separated from a beloved company,
sweet in yield, pleasant to taste, and pure.
Sweet and pleasant was our fellowship.
قدindeed سُلَّwas drawn out منfrom جِسمْيmy body وكانand he was شَقيقَهits brother
فرجعتso I returned عنهfrom him بقلبيwith my heart المقروحwounded
He was drawn from my body, and he was its brother;
He was plucked from my being though we were twins,
so I came away from him with my heart wounded.
So my heart returned wounded.
هاbehold أنتyou تفقدlose منone who حكاهresembled him برقَّةin tenderness

Look: you lose one who resembled him in tenderness
You look for one I described as gentle,
and radiance, and I see you in torment.
And radiant, while you are in doubt.
وأناand I لهُfor him ولقدand indeed فَقدْتُI have lost بعَيْنهِhim himself
أفليسis it not, then بُخْلُwithholding مدَامعيmy tears بقَبيحshameful
And I suffer for him, having lost that very one—
I lost him before my eyes,
would it not be shameful to withhold my tears?
Isn’t it miserly for my tears to be scarce?
بالنّارِwith fire فَرّقتِparted الحوادثُmisfortunes بينناbetween us
وبهاand with it نذَرْتُI vowed أعودُI return أقتُلُI kill روحيmy soul
With fire, misfortunes parted us,
Events have separated us with fire,
and with it I vowed to return and kill my soul.”
And with it I vowed to return and kill myself.
