An age with few noble sons,
A brief time of select progeny,
And an era when people's loyalty is a marvel.
And an era whose loyalty is wondrous,

And a heart like the parchment of archers - wounded,
Its pages filled with scars.

And a bosom friend whose abode though near,
A watcher over him claims a share of my two eyes.
Yet a watcher parts me from his eyes,

One of the slender-waisted: above his robe's fastening,
Above the bridge of his nose are lines,
He is lines; beneath it, a sand dune.

His eyelid's slit narrows when he gazes,
The lid of his eye contracts when he is tender,
Yet the space he offers lovers to embrace is wide.
And his embrace is spacious for lovers,

He wantonly joins his ears to his cheeks,
And jewelry has kinds that are never fashioned.

An eye of his and a hand both shoot arrows,
An eyelid and a palm cast arrows at him,
And each strikes the very cores of hearts.
And all hearts' kernels desire him,

His days either a halt or a tour

بقلبيin my heart لديهاat it مِنfrom هواكَmy love for you وَجيبa pounding
A messenger conveyed to me a saying from you,
Talk that scraped my heart - effective words,
At which my heart pounds with love for you:
Though many a discourse leads to marriage,
كلامٌwords حشاfilled قلْبيmy heart كلاماًwith wounds مُمضّةًpainful
وَرُبَّand many an خطابaddress جاءcame منهfrom it خُطوبcalamities
Words that filled my heart with piercing wounds—
If what I heard is true, then nothing
How often an address has brought calamities!
Cures the disease of anguish but parting,
فإنْthen if يكis حقاًtrue ماwhat سمِعْتُI heard فماthen not يُرَىis found
لداءfor the disease of القِلىaversion إلاexcept الفراقَseparation طَبيبa physician
If what I heard is true, no physician is found
Yet my love remains in you,
For the sickness of aversion except separation.
And my gratitude stays while the Pleiades shine,
علىdespite أنَّthe fact that وُدِّيmy affection فيin ذُراكَyour shelter مُخلَّفٌis left behind
وشُكريand my thanks مُقيمٌremain ماas long as أقامَstands عسيبʿAsib
Yet my affection is left behind in your shelter,
I was granted much then deprived of it,
And my thanks remain as long as ʿAsib stands.
And how many tribulations befall men!
رُزِقْتُI was granted كثيراًmuch ثُمَّthen إنيindeed I حُرِمْتُهwas deprived of it
وكمand how many نائباتٍmisfortunes للرجالِupon men تنوبbefall
I was granted much, then was deprived of it;
Would that I knew a crime I'd committed,
How many misfortunes befall men!
That I may hope when repenting to be pardoned,
وياand O ليْتنيwould that I أَدْريknew بذَنْبٍof a sin جَنيْتُهI committed it
لعلِّيَso that I might أرجوhope for الصّفْحَpardon حينَwhen أتوبI repent
Would that I knew of some sin I had committed,
But confused, my heart knows not the path
So I might hope for pardon when I repent.
To patience, or when my will shall return,
ولكنّنيbut I حيرانُam bewildered لاneither القلبُthe heart يهتديfinds its way
لصبْرٍto patience ولاnor عزْميmy resolve إليّto me يثوبreturns
But I am bewildered: neither does my heart find its way
For amnesty or excuse from you I long
To patience, nor does my resolve return to me.
Whether offenses were mine or not,
وللعفوand for pardon أوor للعذرِfor an excuse منكfrom you ترقُّبيmy waiting
لئنwhether indeed كُنَّthere are ليto my account أوor لمnot يكُنَّthere are ذنوبsins
I await pardon or an excuse from you,
Whether I have sins to my account or none.
