طَلَعتَyou rose عَلَيناupon us مِنfrom سَماءِthe heaven of المَكارِمِnoble deeds
وَأَهدَيتَand you bestowed أَنوارَthe lights of الأَياديfavors الجَسائِمِmighty
You rose upon us from the heaven of noble deeds,
And you bestowed the lights of mighty favors.
وَأَولَيتَناand you granted us ياO ابنَson of الكِرامِthe noble كَرامَةًhonor
وَهَلand does يُكرِمُhonor الأَضيافَthe guests غَيرُanyone but الأَكارِمِthe noblest
And you granted us honor, O son of the noble,
And who but the noblest honors guests?
وَقُلتَand you said المَطاياthe mounts قَدindeed أَتَتناcame to us بِقادِمٍwith a newcomer
فَقُلتُso I said أَلاtake heed لاno بَلrather أَتَتكَcame to you بِخادِمِwith a servant
And you said: the mounts have brought us a newcomer;
So I said: ah, no—rather they have brought you a servant,

وَماand not الفَضلُmerit إِلّاexcept لِلعُهودِto the pledges القَدائِمِthe longstanding
Long bound by pledges of affection, sincere in his allegiance;
And merit belongs only to pledges of old.
دَعَتهُsummoned him عَلىdespite نَأيِthe remoteness of الدِيارِthe dwellings صَبابَةٌardent longing
فَأَوقَدَso he kindled نارَthe fire of الشَوقِyearning بَينَamid الحَيازِمِthe breasts
Longing summoned him despite the dwellings' remoteness,
So he kindled the fire of yearning within his breast.
وَحَنَّand he yearned إِلىfor وَصلٍreunion يُجَدِّدُhe renews رَسمَهُits trace

And yearned for reunion, to renew its traces,
So from afar he set the swift-striding camels racing.
وَلَوand if كُنتُI had been لَمّاwhen اِشتَقتُI yearned أَصبَحتُI had become مالِكاًmaster of

عِنانَthe reins of اِختِياريmy choice فيin زَمانِa time of المَراغِمِconstraints
And had I, when I yearned, come to possess
The reins of my choice in a time of constraint,
إِذَنthen لَخَطواتُI would surely traverse (probable reading) الأَرضِthe earth نَحوَكَtoward you واسِماًmarking
بِأَجفانِwith the eyelids of عَينيmy eye لاnot بِوَقعِwith the tread of المَناسِمِcamels' feet
Then I would have crossed the earth toward you, marking it
With my eyelids, not with the tread of camels' feet.
وَوَاللَهِand by God ماnot كانَwas اِنتِزاحِيَmy staying away عَنfrom قِلىًaversion

And by God, my staying away was not out of aversion,
Nor out of obedience on my part to a reproacher's blame.
وَلاnor كُنتُwas I إِلّاanything but غائِباًabsent مِثلَlike شاهِدٍone present

Nor was I anything but absent as though present,
Though time's vicissitudes bent my resolve.
تُمَثِّلُكَconjures you الذِكرىmemory إِذاwhen شَطَّتِstretches far النَوىseparation

Memory conjures you when separation stretches far,
Before my eyes, so I become like a close, constant companion.

Has long brought solace to the souls of peoples,

Was only my jealousy of my messenger, lest he be seen
To precede my heart toward these landmarks;

And of a pen that hastens to you headfirst,
Thus fulfilling the prescribed duty incumbent on me.

By my life, you have gladdened me with a marvel
Of speech, a virgin creation resembling a stringer's necklace.
وَإِنand if تَفتَتِحyou initiate طَولاًa generous favor فَماfor not زِلتَyou have ceased سابِقاًbeing foremost

And if you initiate a favor, you have always been foremost
In reaching every pinnacle of glory and noble deeds.

I see your gleams in the sky of high honors,
And my eyes have cast a lightning-watcher's glance.
وَماand not اَنتَyou إِلّاanything but السَيفُthe sword وَالدَهرُand time غِمدُهُits sheath

وَلاand no بُدَّescape يَوماًone day مِنfrom عَزيمَةِthe resolve of شائِمِa sword-drawer
You are nothing but the sword, and time its sheath,
And one day, inevitably, someone must resolve to draw it.
وَهَلand is شائِمٌa sword-drawer إِلّاother than يَدُthe hand of اللَهِGod حَدُّهُits edge

And who draws it but God's hand? Its edge is
To aid the wronged and lay the wrongdoer low.
كَأَنّيas though I بِذاكَon that اليَومَday أَبرَزُemerge لِلوَرىbefore mankind

It is as though that day I emerge before mankind,
With Sa'd, like a secret emerging from its keeper's breast.
فَقُلso say لِبَنيto the sons of الآدابِletters إِذwhen ذاكَthat أَبشِرواrejoice, all of you

So tell the sons of letters then: rejoice
At the abundance of spoils you will gather.

May you endure! How much noble renown you have left,
Which people's mouths exchange as gifts at the festivals.
