منfrom صَوْتِthe voice of هاتفةٍa calling bird علىupon فَننِa bough
What stirs my sorrow at dawn
in the voice of a calling bird upon a bough?
لمnot يَبْقَremain ليfor me دَمْعٌtears فتُجْرِيَهso you might make them flow
لمnot أَنسَhave I forgotten أَحبابيmy loved ones فَتُذْكِرَنيso you might remind me
No tears remain for you to set flowing;
nor have I forgotten my loved ones, that you should remind me.
وأناand I الفِداءُthe ransom لمُقْلتَيْfor the two eyes of رشَأٍa young gazelle

And I would give myself for the two eyes of a young gazelle
who stole my heart the morning he bade me farewell.
ماnot ضَمَّنيhe embraced me يومَon the day of الرَّحيلِdeparture هَوىًout of love
بلْrather كانhe was يُدْنينيdrawing me near لِيُبْعِدَنيto send me away
He did not embrace me out of love on departure day;
rather, he drew me near to send me far away.
تاللهِby God لمnot تَرَyou have seen عاشقاًa lover كمَداًgrief-stricken
إنif كنتَyou were يومَon the day of البَيْنِparting لمnot تَرَنيyou saw me
By God, you have not seen a grief-stricken lover
if you did not see me on the day of parting.

والدَّمْعُand the tears أسرِقُهI shed them secretly فيَفْضَحُنيand they expose me
And my heart outstrips me, and I follow it;
and I shed my tears by stealth, yet they expose me.

And upon their camels are full moons of the night
who stirred my sorrow the day they departed.

They journeyed on pale camels; had I wept as
parting commanded, they would have journeyed in ships.

She rose to bid us farewell, her face unveiled;
and a moon appeared to us upon a bough.

A face that, when it turns away from passionate love,
joins ugliness to beauty within itself.

And a cherished one whose coquetry holds subtleties
hidden from the perceptive observer.

فتُقيمُso she conjures ليfor me طَيْفاًa phantom يُشوِّقُنيthat makes me yearn
She fears my forgetting her whenever she is far away,
so she conjures for me a phantom that stirs my longing.

And she grows jealous of it when I take comfort in it,
so she stirs for me a memory that keeps me awake.

O my two companions, leave off your reproaches;
for anything but your reproaches suits me.

Do not instruct me—may I never lose you both—
about Time; indeed, Time has taught me.

I have grappled with my days in earnest,
with what was gentle in them and what was harsh.

And in them I recalled more than one thing;
and calamities are wondrous in the favors they bestow.

Whoever speech did not make known to me, nor
reveal to me, calamity made known to me.

The mountains have risen in defiance of me,
though for so long they used to befriend me.

that you should be the eye of the lands, yet
I have no one in you who casts a glance at me.

And some console me with their aversion,
whose companionship once consoled me.

And their abandonment would indeed be easy for me,
if only I had a heart that obeyed me.

Leave me to that, for I will not desist,
O friend, unless I am changed.

My way and Time's way are this: whoever
I approach in affection holds me at a distance.

وإذاand when تركْتُI abandon الشّيْءَa thing يَطلُبنيit seeks me
And when a thing is hard to attain, I seek it;
and when I abandon a thing, it seeks me.

And my friends are of two kinds, if judged
by the bright face of fairness and Time:

أنا أو صَديقٌ ليس يُنْصِفُني
either a friend whom I do not treat fairly—
I myself—or a friend who does not treat me fairly.

And Time—I am powerless to change it,
and likewise it is powerless to change me.

my condition by Time, its halter let loose:

Do not cease to marvel at its happenings;
Time's nature was founded upon contrariness.

The age that belittled me was not disgraced through me;
O you who envy me; rather, my age was disgraced for my sake.
