Stop where your estrangement has brought me.

And brown spears stand behind my blood, so beware.

until, when the appointed time for parting comes, he keeps his word.

and incline kindly, like your flowing, bending temple-lock.

O my reproacher, and whoever listens to reproach,

when the slender one with dark, bright eyes gazes,

you blame my heart because his gaze struck it dead:

why do you intervene between the arrow and its target?

Ask the noble women of this tribe what blood-debt

the wide eyes claim against the weeping eyes.

you are more truthful, my tears, so describe it to them.

how could they, when the water is outward and the fire concealed?

and tears did not fall under the informers' watch.

if her curtain were lifted before the sun, the sun would be eclipsed.

of hers, and a smiling mouth sipped with the gaze.

have departed, carrying the life of the wasting lover.

by calamity's hands into this far-flung separation:

you called, 'O sword, rise for the kingdom and pluck them!'

    Time's balance, making it no longer uneven;

rather, this age fell sick with anxiety

when you fell sick; when you recovered, it recovered.

O you, to whose welcoming presence I have come

after my absence, with pure praise among my gifts:

when you graciously inclined your side toward me,

and a noble man is captured by affection and kindness,

dogs are indeed jealous over carrion.

All this, while from Arrajan I have no gains,

despite my office, except bearing its burdens.

it babbles only of gleaming swords and hide shields.

who today distinguishes between wrong and right.

that turns the envier back, his backbone broken by it.

Look upon a poverty degrading my condition,

as it shows, and draw over it the veil of my dignified restraint.

Stretch out a right hand raining like a cloudburst,

and hear praise fragrant as an untouched meadow.

Among the sons of my age, you alone are generous,

so that a young man may always find shelter in your protection.

but there is no successor to you—may we never lose you—

under the shade of a life unbroken as the life of Time,

and a kingdom's unity, harmonious like a strung necklace.
