ماwhatever أَنسَI forget لاnot أَنسَI shall forget لهof his مَوْقفاًa moment of standing
والعِيسُand the pale camels قدalready ثَوروهُنَّthey roused them الحُداهْthe camel-drivers
Whatever I forget, I shall not forget that moment when he stood,
What a companion, who has no companion
while the camel-drivers had roused the pale camels.
The stallions were enraged by his courage
لمّاwhen تجلَّىshone forth وجهُهhis face طالعاًrising
وقدand already تَرامَتْdarted about نَظَراتُthe glances الوُشاهof the slanderers
When his face shone forth, rising,
When his face appeared radiant
and the slanderers' glances darted about,
And the gazes of the onlookers drifted
قابلَنيhe faced me حتّىuntil بدَتْappeared أَدمُعيmy tears
فيin خَدِّهhis cheek المصقولِpolished مِثْلَlike المِراهa mirror
he faced me until my tears appeared
He met me until my tears
in his cheek, polished like a mirror.
Appeared on his polished cheek like a mirror
يُوهِمُhe makes believe صَحْبيmy companions أَنّهthat he مُسْعِديsharing my grief
بأدْمُعٍwith tears لمdid not تُذْرِهاshed them مُقْلتاهhis two eyes
He makes my companions think he shares my grief,
Making my companions think
with tears his eyes did not shed.
He sympathizes with tears he did not shed
وإنّماand only قلَّدنيhe hung upon my neck مِنّةًa favor
بدَمْعِwith tears عَينٍof an eye منfrom جُفونيmy eyelids مَراهhe drew them forth
Yet he merely hung a favor about my neck,
But he only did me a favor
with an eye's tears he drew from my own eyelids.
With the tears from my eyes that he borrowed
ولمand did not تقَعْfall فيupon خَدِّهhis cheek قَطرةًa drop
إلاّexcept خَيالاتُreflections دُموعِof the tears البُكاهof the weepers
And not a drop fell upon his cheek,
Not a drop fell on his cheek
except reflections of the weepers' tears.
Except the illusions of my teary eyes
