    Su'ad's pledge has changed, and so has her familiar haunt.

    Why, then, do reproachers and faultfinders abound?

    I have not forsaken my pledge to my beloveds in love,

    though the dwelling has changed from what I remember.

    أو كنتَ ذا شَجَنٍ فإنّي مُسعِد

    If you would share my sorrow, I am love-stricken;

    or if you bear sorrow, I will share yours.

    بهمُ فغاروا في البلادِ وأنجدوا

    I weep for those whom separation scattered;

    they went through the land, down to the lowlands and up to the highlands.

    They went far away, yet my gaze was fixed upon their image

    by my remembrance of them—as though they had never gone far away.
