بِالشامin al-Sham يُوجدis found وَالإِفضالand generosity وَالفطنand discernment
Whatever beauty brings forth, or the ships bring,
Neither beauty grows, nor do ships bring
Is found in al-Sham, along with generosity and discernment.
In Damascus exist generosity and wisdom
عَلىupon المَسَراتjoys قَدindeed شَيدَتhas built مَرابعهاits abodes
فَلَيسَso not يَسلُكmakes its way فيهاinto them الهَمworry وَالحُزنand sorrow
Upon joys it has built its abodes,
Its dwellings erected over joy
So neither worry nor sorrow finds its way into them.
So sorrow and anxiety do not tread its paths
لَمdid not تَلقَyou meet غَيرother than كَبيرa great man فيin مَهابَتِهِhis awe-inspiring dignity
أَوor بَدرa full moon داجيةa dark night يَمشيwalks بِهِwith it غُصنa bough
You have met none but a man of imposing majesty,
You will not find other than the greatest in his awe
Or a dark night's full moon, borne along by a bough.
Or a bright full moon walking on a branch
فَإِنso if نَظَرتyou look فَماthen that which تَعنوbow in submission العُيونthe eyes لَهُto it
وَإِنand if سَمعتyou listen فَماthen that which تُصغيlistens attentively لَهُto it الأذنthe ear
So if you look, you see what the eyes bow before;
If you look you cannot divert your eyes from him
And if you listen, you hear what the ear heeds.
If you listen you cannot turn your ear from him
