ذاكَ الَّذي ملَ مِنهُ اليَوم مَضجعهُ
What harm would their phantom suffer if it visited its likeness—
What harm if their phantom visited its likeness?
That one whose bed has grown weary of him today?
That one whom today his bed wearies,

And where is sleep, when, since their departure, sorrow's door
And sleep - where is it? - while after them remains
Is knocked upon by a hand yearning for death?
the door of sadness upon which the hand of one wishing for death knocks.

إِن شَطت الدار وَطالَ الحِجاب
Death, to me, is the sweetest thing to be reaped,
Death for me is the sweetest thing to be gained
If the abode lies far away and the veil lasts long.
If the house becomes desolate and separation prolonged.

إِذ لا يَرى الجَنة أَهل العَذاب
Love's captive does not enter the Fire,
No prisoner of passion enters the fire
For the people of torment do not behold Paradise.
Since no inhabitant of torment sees paradise.
