وَنُداريand we humor others وَماand not بِناin us مِنany بِداريhaste
We alone are the people in every abode;
We are the people in every house
and we humor others, though we are in no haste.
And we pretend while having no pretense
لَوif أَرَدناwe wanted غَيرother than الجِيادthe steeds رَكِبناwe would have ridden

Had we wanted mounts other than steeds, we would have ridden,
If we wanted other than valor we would have ridden
wherever we journeyed, upon ravening lions.
Wherever we wished on the ferocious lions

But the days have waged war on us
Except that days have warred against us
because we objected to fate's decrees.
For our objection to the decrees of fate
كُنتُI was كَالبَدرlike the full moon إِذwhen عَراهُbefell it كُسوفan eclipse

I was like the full moon when an eclipse befell it,
I was like the full moon when an eclipse afflicted it
and the least of the brilliant stars went unscathed in the sky.
And it escaped in the sky with scarcely any light
كُنتُI was كَالشَمسlike the sun حينَwhen يَحجبهاveils it الغَيthe cloud (first part)

مcompletion of 'cloud' فَتَرويso they recount العُيونthe eyes عَنfrom أَبصارsight
I was like the sun when clouds veil it,
I was like the sun when clouds conceal it
so eyes recount what they see.
So eyes refrain from looking
كُنتُI was كَالعَنبَرlike ambergris الَّذيwhich فاحَwafted forth طيباًfragrance

I was like ambergris whose fragrance spread
I was like ambergris whose fragrance spread
when time exposed it to fire.
Whenever it met fire in time
كُنتُI was كَالجَوهَرlike the jewel الَّذيwhich صانَهُkept it safe الدَهtime (first part)

رcompletion of 'time' لِحرصout of care عَلَيهِfor it وَسَطamid البِحارthe seas
I was like the jewel that time kept safe
I was like a gem preserved by the sea
out of care for it, amid the seas.
Out of greed for it amidst the oceans
كُنتُI was كَالرَوضlike the garden إِذwhen جَفَتهُforsook it غَيوثrains

I was like the garden forsaken by the rains
I was like a garden when rains abandoned it
of good fortune; so my poems grew lush.
Due to good fortunes so my splendor thrived
كُنتَyou were كَالصَقرlike the falcon إِذwhen لَوَتهُturned it aside عَنfrom الصَيthe hunt (first part)

دcompletion of 'hunt' بِغاثweak birds مِنamong أَشأمmost ill-omened الأَطيارthe birds
You were like the falcon when it was diverted from the hunt
You were like a falcon when it turned away from hunting
by feeble birds, among the most ill-omened of birds.
Hopeless of aid from the most quick-flying of birds

If a helper and a champion are hard to find,
If glorious aid and support be present
the party of the dispossessed has no supporters.
The league of camps would have no helpers
