شَمسthe sun الضُحىof midmorning وَأَهلةand the crescents الأَعيادof the feasts
لَضِياءof the radiance وَجهِكَof your face أَحسدmost envious الحُسادof the envious
The midmorning sun and the crescents of the feasts
are the most envious of all who envy your face's radiance.

And when a singer sings of you in a gathering,
souls dance for you within their bodies.

فَأَبَتso they refused سِوىother than الأَكبادlivers مِنamong أَغمادsheaths
You unsheathed keen blades from the magic of eyes,
and they would accept no sheaths but livers.

Hopes wiped away repose from your phantom's visit,
after weeping had washed away my slumber.

I would not miss youth if I
were recompensed by you with a new life at the appointed time.

Indeed, though I stay in one place, I have
toil in pursuit of lofty aims, and deserts to cross.

Between me and my loved ones from Jilliq
lie the depths of seas and towering mountains.

إِذfor لاno حَبيبٌbeloved يُرتَجىcan be hoped for لِوداديfor my affection
Foolishly and in error, I say 'my loved ones,'
for there is no beloved I can hope will return my love.
ماwhat ضَرّwould harm لَوif هَجرواthey forsake وَصَبريand my patience قاطِنٌdwelling

What harm if they forsake me, while my patience remains
with me, and they turn away, while my heart is still my own?
