قَدindeed كانَwas مَسكَنيmy dwelling الرِياضthe gardens وَإِنَّنيand indeed I
قَد كانَ مَسكَني الرِياض وَإِنَّني
أنسيتُهاI was made to forget them حَتّىuntil كَأَنas though لَمnot تُخلَقthey were created
أنسيتُها حَتّى كَأَن لَم تُخلَق
The gardens were once my dwelling, and indeed I
My dwelling was once in gardens, and yet
have been made to forget them, as though they had never been created.
I've forgotten them as though never made.
وَوِصالand union مَنthe one whom أَهواهI love him لَيسَis not بِمقنعيsatisfying me
وَوِصال مَن أَهواه لَيسَ بِمقنعي
زَمَناًfor a time فَرحتُI rejoiced وَلِلفراقand for separation تَشوّقيmy longing
زَمَناً فَرحتُ وَلِلفراق تَشوّقي
And union with the one I love does not satisfy me;
Reunion with my love cannot console me;
for a time I rejoiced, and my longing is for separation.
Once I rejoiced, now for parting I yearned.
