Spring has arrived: there is no shame upon you
Spring has come, so do not reproach,
in casting off the bridle, nor in sipping wine.
Take off your veil, drink the nectar.

Tawny wine, whose mixing I do not permit
The blond wine, I do not allow its mixing,
except with the saliva of a perfumed young gazelle.
Except with the scented cherry syrup.

When brought forth, it turns night's darkness into morning,
Leave the night's gloom in the morning, when it
as though it had been pressed from rays of light.
Looks as if it extracted lights from the sky.

Rise, bring it where the chatterer has begun his morning,
Rise to where the gazelles have become bold
in the thicket, absorbed in cooing:
Crouching in the meadow engulfed in the grass.

أَوتارُهُ مِن فضة الأَمطار
a bird that lent the bough a harp, strung
A bird whose branch was lent grace nested,
with strings of the rain's silver.
Its strings made of the silver of rain.

ذكر الهَوى مِن سالف الأَعصار
The east wind confides in him, and he in her,
The north wind scatters it and scatters
memories of love from ages past.
The memory of love from past eras.

Let's rise to make the most of youth before
gray hair assails serenity with troubles.
Grey hair throws dust into the bowls of life.

Drink rose wine if cheeks’ roses you cannot find
the roses of cheeks, for want of a dinar.
For lack of gold dinars.

And in love, set with your thoughts the snare of wishes,
Set your thoughts on love and desire’s traps
to catch a shadow or a phantom passing in the night.
For a shadow or passing image to fall.

All this—yet I do not see, should I lose the one
This, while I see that if I lose the one
I love, the gardens of eternity as anything but fire.
I love, I find no paradise but fire.

The one whose beauty enslaves the free
