لِذseek refuge بِمَولىwith a patron مَنwhoever رامَsought فَضلَthe abundance of نَوالِهhis bounty
لِذ بِمَولى مَن رامَ فَضلَ نَوالِه
أَثمَرَتbore fruit بِالغِنىwith riches رُبىthe hills of آمالِهhis hopes
أَثمَرَت بِالغِنى رُبى آمالِه
Seek refuge with a patron: whoever seeks his abundant bounty
He who yearns for the grace of his Master
Sees the hills of his hopes bear fruit in riches.
Sees his hopes bear fruit in abundance
كَمhow often تَمناهُlonged for him مَنصبan office فَتَغاضىyet he turned away
كَم تَمناهُ مَنصب فَتَغاضى
عَنهُfrom it مُستَغنياًhaving no need لِفَرطbecause of the greatness of كَمالِهhis perfection
عَنهُ مُستَغنياً لِفَرط كَمالِه
Many an office longed for him, yet he turned away
How often he longed for high office but feigned
From it, having no need of it, so great was his perfection.
Indifference, so complete was his perfection
شَغلتهُoccupied him العَلياءlofty glory عَنهُfrom it إِلىuntil أَنthat
شَغلتهُ العَلياء عَنهُ إِلى أَن
فَرَّfled مِنfrom غَيرِهِsomeone other than him لتحتto beneath ظلالهhis shade
فَرَّ مِن غَيرِهِ لتحت ظلاله
Lofty glory diverted him from it, until
The lofty preoccupied him until he fled
It fled from another to shelter beneath his shade.
From all else to rest in his Master's shade
قَدindeed أَتاهُcame to him مِنfrom غَيرother than وَعدa promise وَوافىand arrived
قَد أَتاهُ مِن غَير وَعد وَوافى
لاثِماًkissing لِلقُبولfor acceptance تُربthe dust of نِعالِهِhis sandals
لاثِماً لِلقُبول تُرب نِعالِهِ
Indeed, it came to him without a promise, and arrived
Without promise, his Master came to him
Kissing the dust of his sandals to gain acceptance.
Kissing his feet in acceptance, his Master
