أَساءَdid wrong كِبارُناour elders فيin الدَهرtime حَتّىuntil
أَساءَ كِبارُنا في الدَهر حَتّى
جَرىfell هَذاthis العِقابthe punishment عَلىupon الصِغارthe young
جَرى هَذا العِقاب عَلى الصِغار
Our elders did wrong in their day, until
Our elders erred throughout time
This punishment fell upon the young.
Thus this punishment befell the young
لَقَدindeed شَرَبdrank الأَوائلthe earlier generations كاسa cup خَمرwine
لَقَد شَرَب الأَوائل كاس خَمر
غَدَتbecame مِنهُfrom it الأَواخرthe later generations فيin خِمارa hangover
غَدَت مِنهُ الأَواخر في خِمار
The earlier generations indeed drank a cup of wine;
The ancients drank the wine of vice
The later generations were left with a hangover from it.
Leaving those who followed dazed and drunk
