O gazelle of the slope, from the valley of Zarud,

Fear God, and honor those pledges to me.

Grant my eye sleep at night, for never

In all my life in love have I tasted slumber.

The slanderer embellished tales through which

You forsook your pledge to me and made the envious one gloat.

Would that I had not hoped for greater closeness

From you—you have given me rejection instead.

Ah, how I long for the days of meeting!

Would that their remembrance would return to my ears.

Is there any return for our bygone life,

Or for a gazelle, now escaped from my hand?

And might I see the dune's bough, swayed by

The headiness of tawny wine amid the striped robes,

One whose glances, loosed in languor,

Pierced livers before they pierced skin?

If his eyelid makes my heart bleed,

Long have I made cheeks bleed with a glance.

And I am called Manjak among my people,

And my enemies have become witnesses to my merit.

So peace forever from me be upon

The one through whom the Most Merciful has brought existence to life.
