O dwelling, how many a grief-stricken soul is perishing for you,

Enamored of your guarded fawn, the ravisher.

You are not one to tire, though you have turned my wishes back

Denied; and love of you will not forsake me.

I confined my tears to your courtyards, after

Love's anguish barred all my paths except those leading to you.

I recall fortune's fellowship within you, depleted,

And life smiling, revealing a laugher's front teeth.

And upon you shone the cheerfulness of the prince's face.

I would ransom him—what a radiant, blessed face!

A king: the wings of his horses and spears

On battle day are young warriors and angels.

The horsemen move beneath the fold of his stirrups,

Obedient to the reins—what a master he is!

And the humblest slave purchased by his gifts

Is a haven for the fugitive and a resting place for the wayfarer.

In his generosity all mankind shares, yet he

Accepts no partner in his glory.

O lord, whose counsels have governed

The world through skillful, timely redress.

You garlanded your enemies' necks with noble favors

With your sword—the manifest, cleaving truth.

And you erased their souls from the pages of life,

As morning erases the darkness of a pitch-black night.

And you felt such pity that your compassionate sword almost

Wept for them and condemned the slayer's deed.

    فَنَجوا بِيمن جِهادِها مِن مالك

    They took your arrows in their bodies as a token;

So, through the blessing of the arrows' warfare, they escaped Mālik.

They were not ungrateful for your favors, but they were driven

By God's decree into a plight and deadly perils.
