Stirred by affection, now awake

يُسائل عَن فَتى بِالروم أَضحى

أَسيراً دَمع عَينيهِ طَليق

أَسيراً دَمع عَينيهِ طَليق

to ask after a young man in Rum who has become

Asking of a boy in Rome made

a captive, while the tears of his eyes run free?

A captive, tears flow free

إِذابَ البين مُهجَتَهُ صُروفاً

إِذابَ البين مُهجَتَهُ صُروفاً

وَحملهُ الهَوى ما لا يُطيق

وَحملهُ الهَوى ما لا يُطيق

Separation has melted his heart with its vicissitudes,

Separation has saddened his heart

and love has burdened him with what he cannot bear.

And passion burdens him beyond endurance

وَحيداً ما لِوحدَتِهِ أَنيس

وَحيداً ما لِوحدَتِهِ أَنيس

غَريباً ما لِغربَتِهِ شَفيق

غَريباً ما لِغربَتِهِ شَفيق

Alone, with no companion in his solitude,

Alone, with no companion in solitude

a stranger, with none to care for him in his estrangement.

إِذا ما راحَ يَستَسقي سَحاباً
